Only three athletes to represent Tanzania at Tokyo Olympic games

Tanzania will be represented by only three athletes in the Tokyo’s Olympic Games after three runners failed to secure qualifying marks in Cape Town marathon yesterday.

The runners who will represent the country in the event scheduled to start on July 23rd to August 8th are Failuna Matanga, Alphonce Simbu and Gabriel Geay.

The runners who failed to qualify during Langa marathon in South Africa are Agostino Sulle, Faraja Lazaro and Jackline Sakilu.

In the event, Sulle finished seventh after clocking 2:13:52 while Lazaro finished ninth after clocking 2:15:40 whereas Jackline Sakilu clocked 2:37:54.

Sulle, who had high hopes for victory after securing sponsorship from China and Dubai-based shipping company Silent Ocean, failed to maintain his 2:07:45 marathon record at Toronto marathon in Canada last year.

Silent Ocean sponsored a round trip ticket and allowance to participate in the race recognized by the World Athletics Federation.
Qualifying marks for men runners is 2:11:30 and 2:29:30 for women. The race saw Elroy Gelant of South Africa winning gold medal after clocking 2:11:21 while Lesotho’s runners won the second and third position.

The winners in the women race were Naheng Khatala of Lesotho who clocked 2:28:05 and was followed by Zimbabwe’s Fortunete Chidzivo with 2:35:18 and Namibian, Lavinia Haitope who recorded 2:36:39.

Kenya women's volleyball libero cautions against underestimating underdogs

(Xinhua) 09:54, July 18, 2021
NAIROBI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya women's volleyball team libero Aggripina Kundu has cautioned their more experienced Pool A opponents at the Tokyo Olympics not to underestimate the African side when competition serves off on July 25.

Kundu, 28, is one of the more experienced players in a side brimming with upcoming talent, and having been part of the national set-up since 2014, the libero believes the current squad is better placed to register their best ever Olympics performance.

Kenya registered successive 11th-placed finishes at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 in their previous appearances at the Olympic Games, and on their return to the showpiece event, Kundu and her teammates are keen on progressing further than before.

The record nine-time African champions are in Pool A alongside hosts Japan, South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Serbia and Brazil, with the top four qualifying for the quarterfinals.

In measures aimed at minimizing the risk of the entire team being quarantined upon arrival in Japan, the east African side traveled to Tokyo in two batches, arriving there on July 8 and 9 before flying to their pre-Olympics camp in Kurume City.

"We did a lot of strength and conditioning in the gym to gain the much-needed power so that when we strike, the opponent feels the power of [national corn meal dish] ugali," Kundu said from the team's camp in Kurume on Friday.

Since April, the team has been trained by a team of Brazilian coaches seconded to the country by world governing body FIVB, and their impact with the side has impressed the seasoned libero.

The South Americans introduced the Catapult GPS system to monitor the performance of the Kenyan players for the first time, and Kundu believes the innovation has aided their quest to post their best ever Olympics performance.

"With this technology, everyone is given what to work on from the analysis. It has really helped us," she added.

Kundu is among the Kenyan players forced to train from home during the lockdown imposed following the COVID-19 outbreak last year.

However, the libero, who plays for local outfit Kenya Pipeline, noted they have made up for missing out on training and game time ahead of the Olympics, thanks to the technological devices introduced by the Brazilians.

"All these teams are good. Whether it is Serbia or Brazil or the Dominican Republic, anyone who does not take us seriously will be in for a rude shock," Kundu said of their Pool A opponents.

To make the Kenyans feel at home, their Kurume City hosts have gone out of their way to prepare them ugali, a national staple enjoyed across the East African nation.

"I'm so grateful, never thought I would find ugali in Japan. This time, I'm pleasantly surprised," the libero gushed.

No time to rest for Shujaa as World 7s Series resume in September

Simiyu said with a squad of 24 players, there is enough depth to navigate the six tournaments.

Shujaa will not have time to rest upon the completion of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with the World Sevens Series set to resume in September.

The rugby competition at the Olympics is scheduled for July 26-31 after which Innocent Simiyu's charges will shift focus on the World Series.

They will first head to Canada for the Vancouver and Edmonton Sevens tournaments slated for September 18-19 and September 25-26 respectively.

They will take a three-week break before heading to Singapore (October 29-30) and Hong Kong (November 5-7).

The team will tour Dubai on December 3-4 with the Cape Town leg the final stop on December 10-12.

Simiyu said the squad will have to be energised for the six gruelling tournaments in four months after the schedule was disrupted last year by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It's a tall order but once we are done with the Olympics, we will take a rest and then focus on the series. The boys have been crying out to play in these tournaments and we are happy that we going to get some matches under our belts,” said Simiyu.

Simiyu said with a squad of 24 players, there is enough depth to navigate the six tournaments.

"We have depth and we look at giving everyone a chance to play," added Simiyu.

World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin said: “The next six months are an exciting time for rugby sevens’ re-emergence as the Olympic Games are followed by today’s updated HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series schedule of events."

“We sincerely thank HSBC and all partners, hosts and participating teams for their continued commitment, support and spirit of teamwork as we navigate the incredibly complex circumstances relating to the global Covid-19 pandemic."

“On-going work continues with all respective governments, health agencies, stakeholders and partners to ensure the events meet relevant Covid-19 requirements as the health and wellbeing of players, fans and all involved remains paramount."

Following detailed discussions between the RFU and World Rugby, the HSBC London Sevens tournament will not take place in 2021. However, planning is already underway for the 2022 HSBC London Sevens, which will be the 20th edition of the tournament.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 schedule will be announced after the Olympic Games in what is set to be a very busy and exciting year for rugby sevens with the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on July 29-31 and Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa on September 9-11.
