TANZANIA - KENYA RELATIONSHIP: ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL TRADE
Tanzania and Kenya, two East African nations with indistinguishable ecological environment, cultural and historical background, are measured blossoming in their bilateral relations.
Our two countries have unique bilateral relations albeit having unsatisfactory economic relations over the years as a result of trade restrictions that hamper cargo vehicle movement.
Under sixth generation president, Samia Hassan, Tanzania is uplifting economic diplomacy. The country is implementing “Blueprint for Regulatory Reforms to Improve the Business Environment” launched in 2018 to ensure that regulatory hurdles are removed in various sectors include cross-border trade.
Earlier last month, President Samia visited her Kenyan counterpart, President Uhuru Kenyatta in which they agreed to ease trade ties, hence, fathoming out of 30 out of 64 issues.
The decision is expected to help Tanzanian traders to export their products to Kenya and the vice versa. According to TadingEconomics, Tanzania exports to Kenya include cereals, residues, wastes of food industry, animal fodder, electronic equipment, articles of iron or steel, and beverages.
Others are spirits and vinegar, paper and paperboard, articles of pulp, paper and board, essential oils, perfumes, cosmetics, toiletries, live animals, soaps, lubricants, waxes, candles, modelling pastes, salt, sulphur, earth, stone, plaster, lime and cement.
Kenya exports to Tanzania are soaps, lubricants, waxes, candles, modelling pastes, machinery, nuclear reactors, boilers, vehicles other than railway, tramway, Iron and steel, pharmaceutical products, plastics, electronic equipment, inorganic chemicals, precious metal compound, isotope, animal, vegetable fats and oils, cleavage products, and miscellaneous articles of base metal.
Kenyan investors are hopeful that President Samia is going to create more conducive environment for the cross-border trade to flourish.
