Tanzania's annual inflation dipped to 9.1 percent in May from 9.7 percent in April due to a slight decrease in food prices, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.

Food has a weight of 55.9 percent in the basket of items that Tanzania uses to measure inflation.

"The decrease in the rate of inflation was mainly attributed to decrease of food inflation to 11 percent in May," NBS said in a statement.

Food inflation stood at 11.6 percent in April.

Among the food items whose prices fell were cereals, sweet potatoes, vegetables, fruits, beans and groundnuts.

However, the prices of non-food items like clothes, charcoal and furniture among others rose.

In its economic survey for 2007 released on Thursday, Tanzania said its annual average inflation was at 7 percent last year. It has set a target to have inflation below that level by the end of June 2009.
