Tanzania ends Q1'09 with 13.9Mn mobile subscribers

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority Status of the Telecom Market for March 2009 reportedly unveiled that the Tanzanian mobile operators have reportedly added 837,883 subscribers in Q1'09, taking the total mobile subscriber base to 13.885 million.
The report shows that Tigo has added 384,925 new subscribers and ended the quarter with 2.95 million subscribers. The operator stood at the third position among the six mobile operators across the nation.

"Vodacom lead the market with 5,670,122 subscribers as it added 261,683 new subscribers during Q1'09. Vodacom is still leading the market, accounting for 40 per cent of total subscriptions though its share dropped by one per cent compared with what it held in the last quarter of 2008" showed the report.
Zain stood second as it added 42,508 new subscribers during the same period, taking its subscriber base to 4,104,879.
Zantel Mobile lost 27,162 subscribers during the period, decreasing the number of users to 1,030,490.

Unfortunately the additions are not linear. A number of people have subscribed to more than one service provider. TCRA would do well to find out how many Tanzanians have a working phone. And out of cruriosity it would be interesting to find out how many of the subscribed to numbers are active.

Look here: Mr. X mara kwa mara simu yake inakuwa na laini ya voda. kwahiyo voda atamuhesabu kwamba ni customer wake(i.e. vodacom subscriber). but Mr. X akitaka kumpigia m2 mwenye tgo line,anatoa laini ya voda anaweka laini ya tgo, hapo TIGO nao wanahesabu kwamba Mr. X ni mteja wao (TiGo subscriber!). Jamaa akitaka kuwasiliana na mwenye Zaina, anatoa laini, anaweka ya Zain, likewise, Zain nao wanamhesabu kwamba Mr. X ni mteja wao( Zain Subscriber)! Kwahiyo endapo TCRA wangetaka idadi ya active subscribers, VodaCom, Zain na TiGo wangempeleka Mr. X na hivyo TCRA kuona kuna wateja 3 wakati ni mmoja!!! wakae chini na kufikiri ili wajue watumie njia gani kutaka kufahamu the aproximate number mobile phone subscriber. Kwa staili hii, am afraid kwamba active subscribers hawafiki hata 7 million, reflecting kwamba still there's enough market for mobile phone industry therefore msiogope kuwekeza!!

Shame on them. Tanzania Communications Regulation Authority seem not to be very good at what they are supposed to monitor themselves!!
Ndio communication gani hii ya kutoa statistics za 1st quarter '09 at the end of the fourth quarter?
