Tanzania eager to adopt Zim’s mining laws

An industry body in Tanzania says it wishes to take a leaf from Zimbabwe’s mining laws as concern deepens about retaining the benefits of mining ventures.

An official at the Confederation of Tanzanian Industries (CTI) says a quota system in the extraction industry akin to one proposed by Zimbabwe would be ideal for the mineral-rich country.

Zimbabwe is in the process of amending the Mines and Mineral Act to warehouse 51 percent shareholding for indigenous black extractors as part of its black economic empowerment strategy.

Tanzania, with rich diamond, gold and gemstone endowments, has rapidly grown to become the country’s leading growth sector in the past five years.

However, CTI claims that growth has not led to the development of the country as the government only retains 2 % of export earnings in royalty with 98 % being repatriated by foreign-owned mining conglomerates.

Tanzania has recently introduced a free and 100 percent profit repatriation by foreign corporations to pull investors to the country.

Mining in the country is dominated by South African and British mining companies.

Although President Jakaya Kikwete’s government promised to review mining contracts in 2005 following pressure from CTI, the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce and other industry bodies, no concrete action has so far taken place.

Only Zimbabwe can do that no matter what!!!
