Tanzania - development, democratic challenges and the election 2010

Africa studies at the School of Global Studies, in cooperation with the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI), organise an open Africa seminar and book launch in connection with the just concluded elections in Tanzania.
The seminar presents the recently released book "Tanzania in transition - from Nyerere to Mkapa", edited by Kjell Havnevik and Aida Isinika with contributions from Tanzania specialists from Norway, Sweden, Britain and Tanzania. Jonas Ewald contributed the chapter on the political development. Sten Rylander, former Ambassador to Tanzania, will comment.
Tanzania¿s relatively high economic growth and a peaceful transition to a multiparty system have been used as a positive example in a context where most neighbours have been suffering from violent conflicts. This seminar presents the findings of the book and discusses to what extent the transition to a market based economy and multiparty system has brought about a transformation of the economic and political society towards sustainable development, poverty reduction and a consolidation of democracy. In the context of the just concluded election we will critically examine whether Tanzania continues to deserve its good reputation. Tanzania has since the sixties been one of Sweden's major partners in development cooperation and hence its development is of general interests for Sweden.
