KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Malaysian authorities have confiscated some 700 African elephant tusks worth about 3 million ringgit ($1 million) destined for China. It was the third seizure of illegal ivory in the country since July.

Customs official Zainul Abidin Taib says the tusks were packed in gunny sacks and hidden in two containers of recycled plastic from Tanzania that were seized last Friday.

Wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC on Tuesday lauded the ivory seizures. The group said it underscored Malaysia's status as a transshipment hub for illegal ivory fueled by rising demand in China.

Malaysian customs seized more than 1,000 African elephant tusks in two earlier shipments. No arrests have been made but Zainal said investigations were ongoing.

If I were a thief, I’d demand a law against politicians invading my turf

If I were a thief I would have lodged a complaint with whoever is supposed to regulate these things. I’m not a thief – not yet, since it looks it’s never too late to become one – but this behaviour really irks me. It’s the behaviour of our politicians I’m talking about. I mean they are being very unfair to our thieves.

It’s like this. Politicians set out to do politics. That’s what they tell us they want to do. If that is the case, they are supposed to make adequate preparations for the job. An aspirant would have to immerse himself/herself in a serious examination of the political history of the world, since those days when serpents were telling people to eat a certain fruit and the offenders were passing the buck, first Adam blaming God and “that woman you gave me,” and then Eve blaming the poor snake, the only character in the fable who did not present a defence. Politics.

Our wannabe politico would study Plato, Cicero, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Hobbes, Hegel, Marx, Bakunin, Gandhi, etc. He would dive into History, Philosophy, and the arts of abstraction, argumentation and disputation; he would whet his oratorical skills and learn how to employ that felicitous turn of phrase when needed. He would make himself the darling of the masses and they would honour him with political power, which he could use to honour the people right back, or abuse it and become a failed politician, a disappointment.

A would-be thief, on the other hand, would learn how to break in, clobber or kill guards before making away with his loot, preferably with minimum harm to himself and his co-thieves. He would study the great robberies in history to find out how his heroes pulled off their jobs.

He would try to find out how that notorious Barabbas convinced the Pharisees and Sadducees that he, the notorious thief, should be set free and Jesus crucified in his place. He would perhaps study how Ronnie Biggs did the Great Train Robbery. He might even want to read up on Houdini to learn the ropes of impossible escapes, though, of course, there is no suggestion that Houdini was a thief.

Those are the two different routes of preparation that our politician and thief would take, if we lived in a rational society. But we don’t, and as a result, thieves are doing politics and politicians are doing thieving. Everything is mixed up so much so it is becoming pretty nigh impossible to tell one from the other. And this is where I detect unfairness.

It’s unfair because the politicians who do thieving are cheating everybody because they do not work for the loot they take. They never take the risks that a real thief takes. They never run the risk of coming up against a robust security apparatus that shoots on sight, or Doberman hounds that hold you by the groin till daybreak.

No, the thieving politicians just sell their offices, and their countries, in the comfort of their cool offices, signing off chunks of territory with whatever lies on, in, or under it with the abandon of a drunk. They are really unfair to the real thieves, those who sweat and for their loot in an occupation that always threatens life and limb.

In certain countries, such as in some Asian countries, politicians who do thieving know they are doing it at great risk of being severely punished if found out. They have been going to jail routinely, and this has included former heads of state. In one country they simply shoot them.

In East Africa, if you are a politician and practise thieving, you get promoted to higher office, say MP, or minister, or even head of state. The more you do thieving the more cash you collect to use in vote buying at the next election so that you can continue thieving…

Seriously, our thieving politicians are being dishonest twice, in the sense that even their thieving is not done properly, like real thieves do it. They are thieving and teaching at the same time, which should not be allowed.
