Wanduguzanguni,

Mijadala mingi imekuwa inaongelea taratibu za kidemokrasia – kuanzia utawala bora, matumizi ya serikali, mapungufu na wajibu wa serikali, lakini kunasehemu moja nyeti tunayo isahau nayo ni “societal values” – the guiding principles of individuals, which shapes responsibilities and roles in production and social relations. The principles of which, before the law the self acknowledges the unwritten code of conducts, which inform socialization and governance process to an individual agency and later to the collective. Religion and traditions provide us with a good start point, but quite diverse as well, we need collective values for the nation.

Policies, structures, and governance practices are not created on the vacuum; rather they are reflection of our society, which constitute them. Kama serikali yetu ni ya kimishemishe, basi ujue kwa kiasi kikubwa, hata sisi wananchi ni wa kimishemishe tu! As our leadership disguises us today – it is indeed a good sign that we no longer want to be the reflection of our leaders. Then, we need to ask ourselves, what are the core values of Tanzania as society, which inform our acts, thoughts, we as citizens, and government in defining our roles, responsibilities and rights.

Do we have core values for this nation? What are they? If we don’t have shared values, can we build them?
