The government decided that Sida should produce a basis for a new strategy for development cooperation with Tanzania. The instructions have a strong focus on democracy and human rights. It will become clear how the areas that Sweden provides assistance contribute to strengthening democracy, its institutions and defenders, the rule of law and increasing human rights in Tanzania.
The government has given Sida a broad mission, where different levels of future cooperation will be analyzed and where a scenario also implies a potential reduction of state-to-state cooperation.
-We have several reasons to worry about the democratic development in Tanzania. This is a first step to see how our future cooperation with Tanzania can look. I myself will also be traveling to Tanzania shortly to continue the dialogue with the government. We have to ensure that Swedish assistance in the best way contributes to creating the conditions for better living conditions for those who live in poverty and oppression in Tanzania, ”says Peter Eriksson (MP) Minister for International Development Cooperation.
The Government instructs Sida to submit proposals on what can be achieved in the areas; human rights, democracy and the rule of law and equality; inclusive economic development; training; environment and climate.
- Environmental and climate issues become a new area for possible development cooperation with Tanzania, and here we specifically highlight the importance of biodiversity and access to renewable energy, says Peter Eriksson.
Other areas that are highlighted include the conditions for Sweden to contribute to increased access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), to productive employment with decent working conditions and to sustainable business and free and fair trade.
Sida will submit a basis for new strategy to the Government Offices no later than 15 September 2019.
