South Africa: It's Zuma!

My take,

1.The ANC is fed up with Mbeki's pomposity and would not tolerate him threatening the constitution.I guess it would be easier to pull a fast one if he had Mandela's gravita or Putin's popularity and command of the party/ country.

2.The ANC did not so much choose Zuma, they wanted Mbeki out.Many members are of the view that Zuma is just too tainted (arms deal, rape charge etc) to be an effective president and his court troubles are not over*.

According to a Markinor poll in May 2006, sample of 1,000 South African Voters) only 26% of South Africans would support Zuma for the presidency of SA **.A November 2007 poll polled Zuma's supporters at 41% (All Africa.com) ***. He is clearly making a comeback

The race for the presidency has just begun, Who will it be? Will Zuma be able to pull a coup-de-grace despite all his problems? He has already been cleared of the rape charges but is bogged by allegations of corruption in an arms deal that prompted the wrath of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a very well respected anti apartheid institution and elder statesman.

But the most important thing is, if Zuma is to be elected, he has "promised" not much will change (All Africa)****

Is this a story of "Same wine, another bottle?"

I think the ANC hegemony that has been hidden under the banner of liberation should come to an end; it is time it gets challenged seriously and this could be a step towards that direction-which will be good news to democracy.

Electing a leader who thinks can avoid HIV infection by having a post-sex shower leaves a lot to be desired!
 
I just don't like this set up, guys. I may be able to explain it later, but surely am sad.

uwezekano wa kuitisha uchaguzi mapema kabla ya 2009 ni mkubwa iwapo kutaibuka hali ya kutoelewana na hii itakuwa moja ya njia au the last compromise...
 
Moja, Mbeki amekuwa akilaumiwa kuwa amekuwa mbali na wananchi na chama cha ANC. Hata hotuba yake siku ya ufunguzi wa mkutano Mkuu wa ANC ilikuwa technical sana.
Mbili, wanachama wengi wa ANC wamechukizwa na hatua ya Mbeki ya kutumia vyombo ya dola kumnyanyasa Zuma.
Tatu, wanachama pia wamechukizwa na nia ya kugombea mara ya tatu.
Nnne, Mbeki amekuwa anaulamiwa kwa kufanya maamuzi bila ya kuwashirikisha wenzake.

Kwa hiyo tangu mwanzo "odds were against him". Ni funzo kubwa kwa vyama vya siasa nchini.

Last year, Zuma was acquitted of raping a family friend. During the trial, he testified that he had unprotected, consensual sex with the HIV-positive woman and then took a shower in the belief that it would protect him from the AIDS virus.

I think I like Zuma, ambaye like Mandela, ali-spend 10 years kule Robbin-Island Prison, kwa sababu ya kupigania uhuru wa South Afrika, maneno ya rape na the rest of the story, ni just the usual politics, tena za Afrika,

Mnyonge Mnyongeni, lakini haki apewe, Zuma is the man Mbeki amepitwa na wakati!

"Mr Zuma has recognised at least 18 children from four “official” wives and several girlfriends. Two children have been born since his acquittal in a notorious rape trial last year".

I applaud ANC's democratic credentials. Vipi, 'sister party' (CCM) hawakuwepo hapo? Nina hakika walialikwa hawa kwenye kikao kizito kama hicho hawakosi.
