Slaa’s no shows irk many Moshi residents

SEVERAL Moshi urban residents have expressed concern over the conduct of the Chadema Secretary General, Dr Wilbrod Slaa, after losing in the presidential race in the just ended general elections.
Dr Slaa, who emerged second in the race, boycotted the final official results announcement ceremony organised by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) at the Karimjee Hall in Dar es Salaam on Friday.
Dr Slaa also failed to show up at the swearing-in ceremony at the Uhuru Stadium on Saturday, despite the call by President Jakaya Kikwete for post-election political healing.
The residents criticised Dr Slaa for his conduct, claiming the behaviour reflected political immaturity, lack of tolerance and civility.
"As a matured and respected presidential candidate, he should have joined other candidates to attend the two functions instead of claiming that the polls were rigged," Mr Innocent John, a businessman told the 'Daily News'.
He said by boycotting the two functions, Dr Slaa has revealed his weakness before the electorate who held him in high esteem for his boldness and political uprightness.
Mr Honest Peter was of the view that by boycotting the two national functions, Dr Slaa has disqualified himself as a serious candidate in future polls.
"As a candidate he was supposed to respect the decision of the people. Dr Slaa is wrong in trying to force a different verdict," he added.
Ms Margareth Thomas, a businesswoman, advised Dr Slaa to adjust his political strategies in future.
Meanwhile, a councillor elect for Mji Mpya ward in Moshi Municipality, Mr Abuu Shayo, has requested President Kikwete to provide free education and health to Tanzanians.
He said the majority of Tanzanians cannot afford to meet higher education and health bills, the government could subsidise or provide such services free of charge to equip Tanzanians with necessary skills and physical ability to eradicate poverty.
