Police in Singida have arrested Itigi Town Council executive director Pius Luhende and two game rangers over allegations of shooting dead a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church faithful.
Mr Luhende reportedly went to the church on Saturday to collect revenue for the council when in the process of asking the faithful, identified as Isaka Petro, to pay the money, a bullet was fired, killing the worshipper on the spot.
The minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Mr Selemani Jafo, confirmed the incident over phone.
“It is true that the killing did occur and as we are talking, the director for Itigi Town Council and two game rangers are under police custody over the incident,” he said.
He condemned the incident. “I have not yet received detailed information about the incident, but in short, it is a very bad occurrence that should not have happened. I will speak in detail after getting the full story,” he said.
Singida Regional Commissioner Rehema Nchimbi referred Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) reporters to police when she was asked over phone to explain what she knew about the issue in her capacity as the chairperson of the Regional Defense and Security Committee.
“That’s not a political issue. The Singida [RPC] Regional Police Commander may be in a better position to speak about the issue in details,” she said.
MCL’s efforts to talk to the RPC proved futile as the call went unanswered.
Pastor Manyigina Manyigina of SDA Church said during the fateful day, he was leading the faithful for Saturday prayers in Singida when he received information about the event at Itigi.
“I was forced to rush to Itigi but when I reached there, I saw that the RPC had already arrived and that the deceased’s body had already been taken from the area,” he said.
He said the incident happened as soon as the faithful had gathered for Saturday 13:00 prayers.
“The believers informed me that as soon as they had taken their lunch, some of them gathered outside when they saw two Land Cruiser vehicles with government registration numbers entering the area. The director and two game rangers disembarked from the vehicles,” he said.
While there, the three fought several believers as they searched for the one that they wanted.
“They went inside the church and fought some believers and went outside while closing the door so that the believers should not go out. After a short time, they re-entered the church and shot dead one believer who died on the spot,” he said.
