Nimeamua kuuliza hili swali baada ya kuwa njia panda kwa muda mrefu. Wengine husema wakati mvua inanyesha hasa ya radi simu inatakiwa ifungwe maana ni hatari. Wengine husema haina tatizo. Naomba mnielimishe tafadhali.
 
Simu ina chaji ndani, wakati mvua yenye radi ina chaji pia..hivyo naona kuna uwezekano wa mvutano na kusababisha madhara kwa chombo au hata mtumizi!

Lakini nimewahi kushuhudia simu iliyomlipukia mtu ikiwa mfukoni, na wakati huo hapakuwa na mvua wala radi!...Ni kwamba jamaa alisikia kishindo toka mfukoni, na ghafla suruali ikaanza kutoa moshi mwingi, huku jamaa akielekea kuwaka moto...

Kwa bahati nzuri alifanikiwa kuichomoa simu hiyo mfukoni na kuirusha mbali, huku akiachwa na matundu kwenye suruwali kiasi ilikuwa ni aibu kwake kutembea mbele za watu...alishauriwa kuripoti ishu hiyo kwenye kampuni ya simu prvider wa huduma hiyo, lakini walishindwa kutoa jibu la maana!

Hivyo ndivyo ilivyo. Ukweli ni kwamba simu za landline zina uwezekano mkubwa kuathirika kwa radi kwa vile upo radi hufuata mkondo wa waya wenye resistance ndogo. Simu za mkononi hazina waya na hilo linasababisha ugumu wa radi kufuata mkondo hadi kwenye simu.
Tafsiri ya hili ni kwamba simu za mkononi ziko salama kutumiwa hata wakati wa radi lakini si za landline ambazo unatakiwa kukaa nazo mbali linapotokea tishio la radi.

Hakuna uhusiano wa mawimbi ya simu na radi, simu ya mkononi ni salama na haiongezi wala kupunguza chance zako za kupigwa na radi. Kama huyu jamaa alipigwa na radi wakati anaongea kwenye simu ni coincidence tu.

Siyo kweli, simu zote ni hatari, mwaka juzi kuna case mbili za watu kuunguzwa na radi wakiwa wanatumia simu zao.
Simu ziliungua kabisa na wao walijeruhiwa mikononi na usoni.

The claim that mobile phones are a risk when used in a storm is misleading.

According to safety authorities, somebody who is outside increases their risk of being struck if they are on high ground, in an open space, near water or near large metallic structures or trees. These factors are more important to safety in an electrical storm than the use of a mobile phone.

Although some people speculate mobile phones pose a risk when used outdoors because lightning is attracted to metal, mobile phone handsets generally contain insignificant amounts of metal.

Mobile phones are low power devices and do not have any characteristics which would make them attractive to lightning strikes.

Following worldwide media interest in 2006 (BBC News and British Medical Journal ), the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a statement, saying lightning is not attracted to people carrying mobile phones.

“Cell phones, small metal items, jewellery, etc., do not attract lightning. Nothing attracts lightning. Lightning tends to strike taller objects,” said John Jensenius, a NOAA National Weather Service lightning expert. “People are struck because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The wrong place is anywhere outside. The wrong time is anytime a thunderstorm is nearby.”

The concern that mobile phones attract lightning was first raised a number of years ago in an internet hoax and is now a recognised urban myth. The medical profession is well aware of the misinformation on this topic as pointed out by Dr. Mary Ann Cooper- Associate Professor, Departments of Emergency Medicine and Bioengineering, University of Illinois in Chicago, in her paper on lightning injury facts:

“The medical literature and medical practice are resplendent with examples of (lightning) myth that grow out of misread, misquoted, or misinterpreted information and that then continue to be propagated without further investigation.”

The types of injury observed are also well known and Dr Cooper also points out that:

“No lightning danger is inherent to cellular phones. Although many reports of lightning injuries involve people who are using cell phones, these reports represent the ubiquity of cell phone usage and of their users' inattentiveness to weather conditions and have nothing to do with the phones themselves.”

Dr Cooper clarifies that electrical lighting damage only occurs with the use of landline phones and not mobile phones.

Next time you find yourself talking on your mobile phone in the middle of a thunderstorm you may want to cut the conversation short. UK doctors have warned of the danger of lightning strikes when using mobile phones outdoors during stormy weather.
In the British Medical Journal, they highlight the case of a teenager left with severe injuries after being struck by lightning when talking on her phone.
The metal in the phone directs the current into the body, they say.
A 15-year-old girl was struck by lightning while talking on her phone in a large park in London during stormy weather.

She has no recollection of the incident but suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated.
A year later, she has to use a wheelchair and has severe physical difficulties as well as brain damage which has led to emotional and cognitive problems.
In the ear where she was holding the phone, she has a burst eardrum and persistent hearing loss.
When a person is hit by lightning, the high resistance of human skin causes the lightning charge to flow over the body - often known as an 'external flashover'.
But some of the current can flow through the body. The more that flows through, the more internal damage it causes.
Conductive materials in direct contact with the skin such as liquid or metal objects increase the risk that the current will flow through the body and therefore cause internal injury.

LIGHTNING FACTS
There are, on average, about 1,800 thunderstorms in progress at any one time around the world with 100 lightning strikes every second.
A lightning bolt travels at about 14,000mph and heats up the air around it to 30,000°C - five times hotter than the surface of the sun.
The chance of being hit by lightning is about one in three million.


Rare occurrence
The doctors at Northwick Park Hospital in London who treated the girl's hearing injuries found three other cases of people being hit by lightning while talking on a mobile phone - all of whom died of their injuries - in China, Korea and Malaysia.
They said although cases were rare it was a public health issue and people needed to understand the risks.
Swinda Esprit, a doctor in the ear, nose and throat department said: "It is obvious really but we all carry mobile phones and we don't think about it.
"If you're struck by lightning on its own it will flash over your body but if you're holding a phone it will internalise and cause much worse injuries.
"Children particularly won't realise the risk.
"In Australia they have guidelines, and one of the things they say is not to hold mobile phones outside during storms."
Dr Esprit said mobile phone manufacturers should warn consumers of the dangers.
Emergency call
Paul Taylor, a scientist at the Met Office said it could also be dangerous to carry a mobile in your pocket during a storm.
"It is well known within the thunderstorm detection community that wearing or carrying metallic objects can increase the likelihood of injury.
"It certainly adds to the intensity of the skin damage and the article certainly amplifies that here.
"I would treat a mobile phone as yet another piece of metal that people tend to carry on their persons like coins and rings".
But Ramsey Farragher of the astrophysics group at Cambridge University, said in the BMJ: "Stabbing a metal pole into the ground and holding onto it is asking for trouble.
"But holding a very small amount of metal inside an insulated plastic case is unlikely to enhance the electric field enough to increase the risk of a strike much further."
Chris Abraham of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association agreed.
He added: "The risk is that people may not have their mobile phones with them to call emergency services if someone is struck by lightening."
