ELEVEN road projects worth 425bn/- have stalled due to government's failure to pay contractors, it was revealed on Tuesday.

Briefing journalists after a closed-door meeting at Bunge offices in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure, Mr Peter Serukamba said the MPs have urged the government to expedite payments to the contractors for work on the projects to resume.

Earlier, the Tanzania Road Agency (TANROADS) made a presentation on the status of road projects to the MPs.

Mr Serukamba said six more projects have slowed down while seven contractors have expressed interest to temporarily suspend their projects until the government pays them.

"The government has no other option but to pay the contractors, even if it means borrowing funds. My committee plans to meet with the Prime Minister (Mizengo Pinda) and bring up this matter before things get worse," Serukamba said.

He said officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development told the MPs that they hoped to get funds from treasury and were working on the issue as a matter of urgency.

Projects that have been suspended include Sumbawanga-Kanazi, Kanazi-Kizi-Kibaoni, Lwanjilo-Chunya, Bariadi-Lamadi, Kagoma-Lusahunga, Tabora-Ndono, Ndono-Urambo, Jet Corner -Vituka-Davis Corner, Ubungo Terminal-Kigogo-Kawawa and Kawawa-Msimbazi-Twiga.

Projects that are being implemented but at a slow pace include Marangu-Rombo Mkuu, Sumbawanga-Kasanga, Magole-Turiani and Korogwe-Handeni.

Others are Kagoma-Lusahunga, Isaka-Ushirombo, Singida-Katesh, Kitumbi-Segera-Tanga, Bagamoyo-Msata and Mkata-Handeni. The list also include Nzega-Puge, Tabora-Nyahua and Mwanza-Musoma projects.

We need to change the approach kama tunataka kufika tunakokwenda
