Tanzanite mining ban partially lifted

Tanzanite mining activities resumed at blocs C and D here yesterday after the government lifted a ban imposed after some 60 small-scale miners died in flooded pits on Saturday.

The lifting of the ban on the activities at the site, the only place in the world with deposits of the gemstone, was announced by Manyara Regional Commissioner Henry Shekifu.

He was speaking at the scene of the tragic incident, about 40km south-East of the northern safari capital of Arusha, in which the miners were killed.

``Mining can now resume at the two blocs, neither of which was affected by the floods,`` declared the RC, adding that resumption of work at the hardest hit bloc (B) would be suspended until all bodies still trapped in the pits were retrieved.

Seven days after the accident, rescuers yesterday pulled out 11 decomposed bodies from Lucas Roikas mining pit, bringing the confirmed death toll so far to 32.

Shekifu said the decision to allow mining activities at the two blocs to resume was reached after mining government authorities and mining experts had carried out ``a comprehensive assessment of the situation``.

``The government has been uncomfortable seeing people (the small-scale miners) continue suffering irreparable losses resulting from its ban,`` he explained, noting that the ban had affected most of the miners and mining bloc owners concerned very adversely.

He commended all those taking part in the search and rescue operation for a job well done, saying they had worked tirelessly day and night difficult underground conditions in rescuing the miners that were still alive and retrieving the bodies of those who had succumbed to the floods.

He expressed hope that the bodies yet to be retrieved would be recovered by next week ``to pave the way for mining activities to resume in the pits still closed``.

An estimated 75 miners went missing and were feared dead following torrential midnight rains that flooded several mining pits operated by private proprietors.

Tanzanite mining is a $300 million-a-year industry to which thousands of people from all over Tanzania rush each year in hopes of finding the rare gem. Most find an endless cycle of poverty.

Three kilometers outside the Mererani township, some 30,000 miners work to depths of up to 300 meters with neither safety regulations nor a daily wage.

Dynamite accidents, collapsing mines and floods have caused hundreds of deaths during the past 20 years.

Way back in 1988, about 50 miners died in a place popularly referred to as Mortuary, while in 1998 floods killed over 100 diggers.

Jamani what measures were taken kuresume uchimbaji wa Madini? Jee serikali imeruhusu uchimbaji baada ya kufanya safety analysis gani?

Nani anafaidika after all? Who is the loosers and who are the winners.

Kila mtu ameona kilichotokea hadi wachimbaji wenyewe. Sasa kama wao wanataka kurudi na hali halisi wameiona shauri yao. Mtoto akililia wembe mpe.
