The dismissal of Di Matteo follows the only real blip in results since he succeeded Andre Villas-Boas in February, with the club having won just two of their past eight matches.

Chelsea say that they will be making an announcement "shortly" regarding a new first-team manager, with Rafael Benitez and Avram Grant among the options to succeed Di Matteo on an interim basis.

Ideally, Abramovich would like to appoint Pep Guardiola, the former Barcelona manager, but it is unclear whether he would be available before the end of the season.

The sacking of Di Matteo means that Chelsea are searching for their ninth manager since Abramovich purchased the club nine years ago, in 2003. To date, only Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti have survived more than one season.

Chelsea’s statement this morning pointed to "recent performances and results" but, even by Abramovich’s standards, Di Matteo has been judged over a remarkably short timescale.

GROUP A


Paris Saint-Germain join FC Porto in the knockout rounds after they won 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev. The two teams play each other in the final round with top spot at stake. PSG must win at home to Porto to achieve that.


Dynamo Kiev are in the Europa League.


Dinamo Zagreb have been eliminated.


GROUP B


Schalke and Arsenal qualify for the next stage with their victories on Matchday Five. Schalke will top the group unless Arsenal win away to Olympiakos and the German club fail to pick up three points at Montpellier.


Olympiakos are in the Europa League.


Montpellier have been eliminated.


GROUP C


AC Milan join Malaga in the Round of 16 with their win at Anderlecht, coupled with Zenit's failure to win at home on Matchday Five. That point for Malaga in Russia secured top spot.


The Europa League place is up for grabs with Zent and Anderlecht level on points and head to head. Zenit currently sit third by virtue of a goal difference of one. Both are away on the final day, Anderlecht at Malaga and Zenit at Milan.


GROUP D


Borussia Dortmund top the group with their win over Ajax as they have a superior head to head record with Real Madrid. Real's point at Man City was enough to secure second place.


Ajax currently hold the Europa League place, and will finish third unless City win away at Dortmund and the Dutch side fail to win at the Bernabeu.


GROUP E


Shakhtar Donetsk have qualified as Chelsea cannot overtake them on head to head record and they need a point at home to Juve to secure top spot, a result which would also send the Serie A side through.


Juventus only need a point at Shakhtar due to their superior record against the Premier League side.


Chelsea can only qualify if they beat FC Nordsjælland and Juventus lose in Ukraine.


FC Nordsjælland have been eliminated which means either Chelsea or Juventus will drop into the Europa League.


GROUP F


Valencia and Bayern Munich have both qualified for the knockout rounds and Valencia can only top the group by bettering Bayern's result on the final day.


BATE Borisov are guaranteed a place in the Europa League due to their superior head to head with Lille.


Lille have been eliminated.


GROUP G


Barcelona have qualified as group winners.


Celtic must better Benfica's result on the final day to go through. And with Celtic at home to Spartak Moscow and Benfica away at Barcelona it is still all to play for.


Spartak Moscow have been eliminated.


GROUP H


Manchester United have qualified as group winners.


Galatasaray are in the box seat, having only to match Cluj's result to book their place in the last 16. Gala are at `Braga while Cluj must travel to Manchester United - meaning the Turkish side are hot favourites to progress.
