Richa Adhia foundation for needy senior citizens set up

Vodacom Miss Tanzania 2007 Richa Adhia has set up a foundation that will be devoted mainly to helping to add value to the lives of senior citizens.

She said in an exclusive interview at the weekend that the focus of the Dar es Salaam-based foundation will be on “coming to the help of old people who are homeless and badly in need of assistance and support”.

“The aim of establishing the foundation is essentially to help old people in need, but that will not mean we will not address the problems of other needy members of society,” she explained.

She added that the foundation would be organising and otherwise support “a whole array of activities”, the first major one being an upcoming free eye camp that will include check-ups, treatment and surgery.

The event will be held in collaboration with Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT), a locally registered non-governmental organisation that is now the largest indigenous provider of disability and rehabilitation services in the country.

CCBRT comprises a well established disability hospital in Dar es Salaam, community programmes in and around the city and Moshi, a training unit and an advocacy unit. Every year, around 120,000 adults and children with disabilities and their caregivers achieve a better quality of life through its services.

Adhia said her foundation was unable as yet to provide accommodation to those visiting the camp for medical attention and assistance, adding: “I call upon individuals and organisations to donate funds to support the camp because for the time being the foundation is running only on donations from a few individuals and a handful of organisations – and no donor funds.”

She emphasized that the foundation “has resulted from my own efforts and deep concern over the plight of needy senior citizens and is by no means a family undertaking”.
Adhia represented Tanzania at the Miss Earth Finals in the Philippines in 2006, before becoming the first Vodacom Miss Tanzania of Indian descent and representing Tanzania at the Miss World finals in Sanya, China.

Best wishes
