Rhodes Scholar

Hivi Tanzania tumeshawahi kutoa Rhodes Scholar kweli?

BTW hii ni foundation kama foundation nyingine tu no big deal at all. Zimbabwe hadi leo wanaendelea kutumia Cambridge kusahihisha mitihani yao ya sekondari.

BTW we nyani kwa nini umeuliza hili swali au Ndio Miafrika ndivyo ilivyo.

Kichuguu,
Asante kwa ufafanuzi. Nadhani mimi nilichanganya Rhodes na Fulbright. Kuna Watanzania wengi tu wamepata Fulbright scholarships.

Paul K. Njoroge

Paul K. Njoroge of Nairobi, Kenya, won the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships for 2002. Njoroge (MIT B.Sc 2000), a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, has demonstrated social conscience, vision, leadership and organizational skills at MIT.

Njoroge is the founder of the MIT-African Internet Technology Initiative (MIT-AITI), a project to teach web programming courses in his native Kenya.

Along with three other MIT students and alumni, Njoroge spent July 2000 at Strathmore College in Nairobi teaching a Java course. They spent six months prior to the trip designing the curriculum and raising money.

Njoroge first envisioned the MIT-AITI project while attending a LeaderShape summer program after his sophomore year. He developed the idea, he said, with the help of his advisor, Paul Gray, professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science and president emeritus of MIT.

After studying at Oxford, Njoroge hopes to play a role in the industrialization of his native Kenya, possibly in telecommunications. "Oxford will provide me with the skills to pursue my goals," he said. "Furthermore, I will meet like-minded people with whom I will share and exchange ideas on how to best develop our respective countries and regions--all in a bid to improve the lives of human beings. So in short, I think I'll develop skills and form networks that will help others and I fulfill our objectives of economic development and empowerment."

Njoroge won the William L. Stewart Award for his contribution to extracurricular activities and events at MIT in 2001. "I will feel some sadness on leaving the MIT community, which has been my family and made me feel at home for the last five years," he said.

The Rhodes Scholarship program was created in 1902 under the terms of the will of Cecil Rhodes. Judges for the 2002 scholarship from the US chose the 32 U.S. winners, from 925 applicants. who attend universities in the United States. The competition in Kenya, where Njoroge won, is separate.

Michael Lokale

OUT OF AFRICA, OFF TO OXFORD

Michael Lokale was born under an acacia tree in Kenya while his illiterate mother, Miriam, tended goats-one of the many jobs she took to send her six children to college. Education, she preached, was the ticket to a good life. Before she died in 1998, she urged her son to become a doctor. "She wanted to make sure the family was taken care of," says Lokale, 24, whose stepfather scrapes by as a corn farmer. "I'm here because of her."

"Here" is the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, where Lokale graduated on May 16. He enrolled in 1999 after his cousin, Olympic gold medalist Paul Ereng, helped persuade VMI's track coach to take Lokale on scholarship. Now chosen as one of Kenya's two Rhodes Scholars, the honors student and star athlete-captain of the track and cross-country teams and conference champion in the 400-and 800-meter races-heads to Oxford University in September to study gene therapy for heart disease.

Once his stint in England is up, he plans to work as a doctor in the U.S. until he saves enough to build a clinic in his village, 12 miles from the nearest hospital-a deadly distance without ambulances. Lokale also aims to give his two younger sisters a shot at higher learning. He has already helped arrange a VMI track scholarship for Dorcas, 19. "In Kenya, women are so subservient," he says. "I want my sister to be a woman who dances to her own tune."

What a comfortable way to earn a degree.

There is no free lunch, waulize Fullbright Scholars wetu (kama wewe sio mmoja wao)!

Hii ndio inaifanya Rhodes Scholarship kuwa prestigious, even though the selection critieria of Fulbright scholars is at par to that of Rhodes. There are more scholarships awarded each year by the former (around 7000 each year) as compared to the latter (7000 people have been granted a Rhodes scholarship since its inception in 1902). So, you can imagine how competitive the Rhodes scholarship is, just by mere fact that they choose extremely few people in a huge pool of extremely accomplished canditates.
