Zambia's president dies in France

Zambia's leader Levy Mwanawasa, 59, has died in a Paris hospital after suffering a stroke in June.

Zambian Vice-President Rupiah Banda made the announcement on state television.

President Mwanawasa suffered a stroke at an African Union summit in Egypt and was then flown to France, where he had remained in hospital.

He came to prominence recently for being one of the African leaders most critical of the violence in Zimbabwe.

Mr Mwanawasa's health was an issue during his presidency.

In April 2006, he suffered a minor stroke four months before general elections.

Zambian president dies: family

August 19 2008 at 01:25PM

Lusaka - Zambian president Levy Mwanawasa died Tuesday morning in a Paris hospital after suffering a stroke in June, a family member said.

"Yes, I can confirm that the president passed on this morning," said the family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Zambian cabinet had been summoned Tuesday to "an urgent meeting", said a cabinet minister who did not want to be named.

Mwanawasa, hospitalised in France after suffering a stroke in June, had required urgent surgery Monday after a rapid deterioration in his health, Vice-President Rupiah Banda said.

"The team of doctors have reported that the intervention was successful but described the condition of His Excellency the President as serious," Banda said, citing a sudden downturn in Mwanawasa's health on Sunday.

The 59-year-old suffered a stroke in Egypt on June 29, on the eve of an African Union summit. It was his second stroke in just over two years. He was airlifted to France after initially being treated in Cairo.

Health Minister Brian Chituwo told Zambia's parliament earlier this month that Mwanawasa would likely remain in the intensive care unit at the Percy Military Hospital near Paris for some time.

"Let us clearly remember that by the serious nature of our Republican president's illness, the healing process will indeed be long," Chituwo told MPs.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa died Tuesday at a hospital in Paris, France, nearly two months after suffering a stroke, a Zambian official told CNN.

He was 59.

Mwanawasa fell ill in late June at an African Union summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Zambian officials said at the time.

He was taken from a hospital in Egypt to an intensive care unit in Paris, but initial reports that he died days later turned out to be false.

Mwanawasa would have turned 60 on September 3.

May God Rest His Sould In Peace and His Angels Look Over People Of Zambia At This Difficult Time Of Mourning The Death Their Leader.
