THE Katavi Regional Commissioner, retired Major General Raphael Muhuga has issued an ultimatum of 21 days to all district executive directors in the region to refund over 200m/- paid to ghost workers uncovered in the ongoing verification exercise or face the consequences.
The RC issued the ultimatum during a press conference held here and attended by members of the regional defence and security committee. The Retired Major General also directed all the District Council Administrative Officers who alleged to have paid the ghost workers be taken to task or else be arraigned before the court of law.
“I hereby give only three weeks to all DEDs in the region to reimburse over 200m/- amount paid to the ghost workers uncovered during the ongoing verification exercise...... “Also all the District Council’s administrative officers who continue to pay the newly uncovered ghost workers be arraigned before the court of law as they have done it intentionally for their own hidden interests, “ charged the RC.
The RC further directed the administrative officers in all district councils in the region to ensure that all ghost workers are deleted from the list of payroll books, short of that punitive measures would be taken against them.
Of late, President John Magufuli tasked Regional Commissioners to ensure that all fake workers were weeded out, giving them three weeks to complete the exercise. He has ordered a probe into “ghost workers” on the public sector payroll after a new audit revealed the government paid over 600bn/- to ghost workers over the past 10 years.
The president also tasked the RCs into evoking the spirit of hard work as opposed to laziness among the youth in their regions, by ordering arrest of all youngsters reluctant to work.
