President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday, November 30, engaged in a telephone call with US President-Elect Joe Biden to discuss a number of regional and international issues.

President Kenyatta used the phonecall to convey a congratulatory message on behalf of Kenya, to Biden who won the November 3 election.

The president-elect offered his gratitude for Uhuru's congratulatory message and expressed his appreciation for the strong and lasting ties between the two countries.

According to a press release from Build Back Better, the transition team of Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris - the two heads of state discussed three issues including climate change, regional security, and the plight of refugees.

"He conveyed his interest in building on that partnership across a range of issues, including by tackling the threat of climate change, supporting refugees and their host communities, and addressing challenges of regional security and instability," read part of the statement.

Climate change has been one of Biden's focus points during his campaign and discussed the decision to rejoin the historic Paris Agreement on his first day in office.

The Uhuru-Biden commitment to support refugees comes after the Kenyan government revealed that it spends Ksh2 Billion annually to sustain a population of close to 2,000 migrants detained within the country.

Kenya has been experiencing security threats especially emanating from Somalia with the al-Shabaab and recently from the unrest in Ethiopia's Tigray region that has spilled over to Kenya.

In November, Uhuru sent a message of congratulations and best wishes to Biden following his win in the recent US elections.
"Americans have spoken loudly and clearly through their votes by picking a highly experienced, colourfully decorated and long-serving leader to become their next Head of State.

"On behalf of the People and the Government of the Republic of Kenya, I congratulate President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris for their emphatic win and wish them all the best as they prepare to lead the United States of America into a future of prosperity," noted the President.

Biden also held separate congratulatory calls on Tuesday with the leaders of Argentina and Costa Rica as well as with the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
