Prof Sospeter M. Muhongo - A suitable candidate for the position of DG of UNESCO

Haka ka-thread ka mwenzetu mbona watu mmekatelekeza tena? We need your support

Huyu ana nafasi kubwa but he has done nothing 4 his country!i do not support this MZEE kwenye hii post!

Hapa unayoyasema sio kweli.

Candidates wa post kubwa kubwa kwenye International system, African Union speaks as a block. So Mr. Farouk is firmly set to be the next DG of UNESCO. And all other candidates from Congo and Cameroon who were vying for the post hawakufika mbali kwenye mchakato wa uchaguzi.

Pole sana Prof. Muhongo. LAKINI KAMA KWELI SERIKALI ILIKUWA NA NIA..KWA NINI HAWAKUKUFANYIA CAMPAIGN KULE ADDIS ABABA KWENYE VIKAO VYA WAKUBWA? Maana international diplomacy ya Tanzania in Africa (thanks to Nyerere) can ONLY be matched by Senegal! Tanzania has a VERY GOOD network and image standing. So wangekuwa na nia kweli ya kumpeleka huyu bwana Paris wangeweza. Sijui Membe anasemaji kuhusu hili.

Well, to me huu mjadala naona sasa umefungwa..maana candidate wetu kesha toswa tayari.

Lets hope for the next vacancy baada ya Ban Ki- Moon. Intend to stand for the Post (mpaka wanamaliza rotation ya Latin America and Europe) na kurudi Africa nitakuwa nimeshafika level ya kugombea!). Naamini wana JF wengi mtanisupport kwa hili! Au mnasemaje?

Wish me well as I embark on my journey!

Masanja,

THISDAY REPORTER
Dar es Salaam

A TANZANIAN geology professor, Sospeter Mwijarubi Muhongo, is among nine candidates seeking to become the next head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The term of incumbent UNESCO Director-General Kochiro Matsuura ends this November. Having served two terms, he is not eligible for a subsequent term.

The 55-year-old Muhongo is African regional director of the International Council for Science which works closely with UNESCO. He is based in South Africa.

Analysts say it is not considered Africa’s turn to head UNESCO and some believe Prof. Muhongo lacks political experience.

The other candidates for the top UNESCO post are Ina Marciulionyte of Lithuania, Irina Gueorguieva Bokova of Bulgaria, Farouk Hosny of Egypt, Alexander Vladimirovich Yakovenko of Russia, Ivonne Juez de A Baki of Ecuador, Benita Ferrero-Waldner of Austria, and Nourini Tidjani-Serpos of Benin.

In September, all candidates will be interviewed by UNESCO’s executive board, after which the 58-member body will vote by secret ballot for the next director-general.

Prof. Muhongo is the founding and the current Director of the ICSU Regional Office for Africa. He is a full professor of geology, a chartered geologist (UK) and the first recipient (2004) of the Robert Shackleton Award for Outstanding Research in the Precambrian Geology of Africa.

He has held key positions in numerous national and international organizations, including that of President of the Geological Society of Africa (1995-2001).

In 2005, he began his chairmanship of the Scientific Board of International Geoscience Programme (IGCP/UNESCO/IUGS), a Board which he has served on since 2001.

He is the current Vice President (Africa) of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMP). He has also served as Deputy Director General of the International Biographical Centre (IBC, Cambridge, UK) and Deputy Governor of the American Biographical Institute Research Association (ABI, North Carolina, USA).

Prof. Muhongo has been teaching and doing research at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) since 1979. He was the Head of the Department of Geology at the UDSM between 1997 and 2000.

In Tanzania, he served as chair for government’s commission of inquiry on the Merelani tanzanite mine’s accident in 2002 and has been chair of the board of directors of the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) since 1999.

Prof. Sospeter Muhongo speaks and writes fluently in English, German and Kiswahili. If elected at the helm of the key United Nations agency, Muhongo will join other high-ranking Tanzanian diplomats in the UN.

They include the UN Deputy Secretary General, Dr Asha-rose Migiro, and the Executive Director of the UN Habitat, Prof. Anna Tibaijuka.

..nadhani hilo ndilo lililopelekea AU kum-support candidate toka Egypt.

Muhongo.
