Mtoto wa mkulima kwa hili la kutumia matrekta ya Tafe na Kubota linaniingia akilini lakini hili la Power tiller aghaaaaaaa. SEVERAL farmers have expressed concern over the influx of sub-standard power tillers in the domestic market and appealed to the government to ban such import.

Farmers and traders interviewed in several regions by 'Daily News' claimed that China was the main source of sub-standard tractors and asked the government to swiftly redress the situation.

Farmers in Mbalali District in Mbeya Region said despite witnessing bumper harvest of paddy through the use of power tillers, they noted that some machines were not durable although their prices were comparatively cheap.

Chinese power tillers are sold at between 4m/- and 6m/- while Kubota power tillers go for between 9m/- and 11m/- depending on the package.

The Mbalali District Executive Director, Mr George Kagomba, said farmers should be careful when buying power tillers, pointing out that in some places, depending on the nature of the soil, more powerful machines were needed.

"It is true that farmers are complaining on some substandard power tillers and our council through extension officers are educating farmers on the need to use equipment of good quality.

"Some of the power tillers are now becoming liability to farmers," he noted. Mr Kagomba said the district has over 800 power tillers and 216 tractors. "With all those tractors and tillers, there was no need for the council to allocate funds to buy 50 power tillers as directed by the government.

Mr Paschal Nyange is an extension officer based in Kondoa district, Dodoma region and said that he felt sorry for farmers who bought ‘low-cost' power tillers only to regret later when the machines under-performed.

Ulanga District Executive Director in Morogoro Region, Mr Alfred Luanda, said his office had imported from China 55 power tillers currently awaiting verification by local experts. "It is necessary we seek technical advice before using the tillers.

This is the first time we have imported so many tillers," he said. The Managing Director of Farm Equip (Tanzania) Limited, Mr Hantarim Hegdekatte, admitted to have registered complaints from customers on durability of some power tillers.

However, he refrained taking any blame insisting that it was individual's discretion to receive supplies from China or elsewhere.

"Not all tractors from China are of poor quality. The 18-HP-Dongfeng type from China, for example, are durable and perform well on the field," Mr Hegdekatte clarified.
