COVID-19 has rapidly affected our day to day life (health, social and economy, businesses disrupted the world trade and movements). This virus creates significant knock-on effects on the daily life of citizens as well as about the global economy.

Dealing with the unforeseen challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has taken a significant toll on people all across the world.

At the time of writing this Special Feature, there are over 27,497,147 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the globe, with 896,957 deaths, and 19,593,511 patients who have recovered.

Undisputedly, disruptions from the COVID‐19 pandemic have immensely dented global economies, with a multiplier effect felt from factories in China to falling global stock and commodity prices, spread to other major parts of the world’s economy.

Beyond its economic implications, the crisis also endangers individual and collective health, emotional, and social functioning, with the imposition of unfamiliar safety measures such as stay-at-home orders, quarantine, and isolation, all of which violate personal freedoms, coupled with large and growing financial losses.

Negative Impact of Covid-19
Loss of Lives, Jobs, and Good Health

Covid-19 has resulted in the loss of many lives as many patients who have contracted the virus are unable to access the cure since there is no confirmed cure yet for the deadly diseases.
Even in countries where there are records of patients who have survived the deadly virus, there are reports that what such patients have gone through when they were having the virus is so tough that they can’t relate it.

Increase In Cybercrime

Sadly, criminals and hackers are also exploiting this situation and there has been a significant rise in Coronavirus-themed malicious websites, with more than 16,000 new coronavirus-related domains registered since January 2020. Hackers are selling malware and hacking tools through COVID-19
t codes on the darknet, many of which are aimed at accessing corporate data from home-workers’ laptops, which may not be as secure as outside an office environment.

Emotional Trauma

Social distancing and lockdowns have also prompted altruistic behaviours, in part because of a sense that “we’re all in this together”. Many people report being bored or concerned about putting on weight; others have discovered a slower pace of life and by not going out and socializing have found more time for family, others and even their pets.

Educational and Parental Effects.

In a bid to curb the spread of the deadly Coronavirus, many laws have been put in place including lockdown of schools, which has affected the education system of many countries and has led to sending students home.
There have been reports from different parts of the country stating that many students are home doing nothing to boost their brain. Most students have to start online classes in other for them not to forget what they have been taught in school. Students who can’t afford online classes are therefore left with no choice than to resort to reading at home or just home not reading.

Economic Meltdown

We have seen the significant economic impact of the coronavirus on financial markets and vulnerable industries such as manufacturing, tourism, hospitality and travel. Travel and tourism account for 10% of the global GDP and 50 million jobs are at risk worldwide. Global tourism, travel and hospitality companies closing down affects SMEs globally. This, in turn, affects many people, typically the least well-paid and those self-employed or working in informal environments in the gig economy or in part-time work with zero-hours contracts. Some governments have announced economic measures to safeguard jobs, guarantee wages and support the self-employed, but there is a lack of clarity in many countries about how these measures will be implemented and how people will manage a loss of income in the short-term.

Positive Effects Of Covid-19
A cleaner world

The lockdowns have seen global greenhouse gas emissions drop significantly.

Under measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus over the last few months, local businesses have been shut, factories closed, social movement restricted, and transportation brought to a halt.

Improved hygiene

At the individual level, most people forget to wash their hands as often as necessary, perhaps because of a hectic lifestyle. But part of safety precautions to keep the coronavirus at bay requires improved hygiene such as the consistent washing of hands. This habit will most likely remain in people’s lives long after the pandemic is over.

Private sector rise to a social cause

With government resources under strain as public health officials ramp up efforts to test more people and provide care for coronavirus patients, the private sector in many countries, particularly African nations, have stepped up to help fight the public health disaster.

Nigeria’s private sector, one of the most affluent in Africa, has made significant financial contributions, through the special fund set up by the country’s central bank, as the novel coronavirus continues to spread across the continent’s most populous and largest economy.

A catalyst for digital transformation

The widespread disruption of global economic and individual activity has forced many companies to speed up their pace of digital transformation.
