World Cup 2010 - Poor Ivorians find money for Sven
Eurosport - Tue, 30 Mar 12:29:00 2010
Sven-Goran Eriksson could make as much as £2 million for three months' work as Ivory Coast coach despite the country being ravaged by poverty.
Over half the population of the African country survives on less than £3 a day, but the former England manager has been given a bumper pay packet to lead the Ivorians during this summer's World Cup.
The Ivorian Football Federation will pay Eriksson a guaranteed £270,000 basic salary but the Swede can earn up to £1.7m in bonuses depending on how far the team progresses in the tournament.
According to a report in The Sun, Eriksson has also been given an uncapped expense account, a team credit card and a swish London flat until the tournament begins.
Ivory Coast have been placed in a tough group in South Africa with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea, but with Premier League stars like Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Manchester City Kolo Toure at their disposal, they are considered by many to be outside bets to win the World Cup.
Eriksson is no stranger to big pay packets. He earned £5m a year as England manager and since then has picked up a further £16m thanks to spells at Manchester City, Mexico and Notts County.
Half the population of the Ivory Coast are currently jobless and the country's life expectancy for men is just 41.
What Sven could earn:
£270,000 basic
£180,000 bonus if Ivory Coast qualify from the group stage
£270,000 bonus if they make the quarter-finals
£360,000 bonus if they make the semi-finals
£450,000 bonus if they make the final
£450,000 bonus if they win the World Cup
Potential total salary: £1.98m plus expenses
