DAR ES SALAAM Oct 11 (Reuters) - Tanzania's governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party faces deepening divisions after an internal leadership vote was marred by widespread corruption allegations.

Several CCM members, including a former prime minister, who lost elections for a seat on the party's national executive committee (NEC) have said the polls were riddled by irregularities.

The long-dominant CCM party, in power since Tanzania's independence from Britain more than 50 years ago, is grappling with infighting as rival politicians look to succeed President Jakaya Kikwete. Kikwete, who must step down in 2015 at the end of his second and final term in office, faces a tough task of uniting a deeply divided party against a resurgent opposition.

    What to watch out for:

    - Growing split in ruling party

The main opposition CHADEMA party accuses the CCM government of trying to thwart its political activities with police stop orders against its public rallies and demonstrations.
    What to watch out for:
-- Nationwide demonstrations. CHADEMA, emboldened by growing youth support, could stage more protests countrywide.
    - Likely violence by protesters

Activists and some opposition leaders have been calling for a halt to new hydrocarbon deals until Tanzania puts in place the necessary policy and legislation to regulate its fast-growing energy sector. The government said it plans to have a new gas policy and legislation before year end.

Tanzania has called for an international mediator to resolve a long-standing territorial dispute over Lake Malawi.

Tanzanian officials say any significant oil or gas finds in the lake could escalate the border issue. Malawi says it owns the entirety of Lake Malawi, but Tanzania claims half of it.

    What to watch out for:

    - Delay of more oil and gas exploration blocks
    - Consequences for any failure of border dispute talks

Tanzanian government officials have announced plans to review gas and mining contracts, worrying foreign investors who want reassurances that the government will maintain a stable regulatory environment.

The government is under pressure from politicians and the public to increase revenues from mining and energy sectors.

    What to watch out for:

    - Shifting of goalposts could stifle future investments

Donors and opposition leaders have questioned the government's seriousness in fighting corruption, and investors have long complained of graft as one of the main reasons for the high cost of doing business in Tanzania.

    What to watch out for:

    - Will Tanzania score major corruption convictions? (Editing by James Macharia and Mark Heinrich)
