Reacting sharply to the killing of its officers and soldiers in an unprovoked attack by ISAF forces, Pakistan on Saturday told the United States to vacate the Shamsi Airbase within 15 days and ordered the immediate closure OF NATO/ISAF logistics supply lines. These major decisions were taken in the emergently held in a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC), the country’s highest strategic decision-making forum, with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the chair.

“In accordance with the resolution of the Joint Session of the Parliament of May 14, 2011, the DCC decided to close with immediate effect the NATO/ISAF logistics supply lines,” said the official announcement made after the hurriedly-called DCC meeting, stating further, “it also decided to ask the US to vacate the Shamsi Airbase within 15 days.”

The government, the DCC decided, will revisit and undertake a complete review of all programmes, activities and cooperative arrangements with US/Nato/Isaf, including diplomatic, political, military and intelligence.

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has strongly condemned Nato/Isaf’s blatant and unacceptable act resulting in loss of precious lives of Pakistani soldiers while lauding the effective response by the soldiers of the Pakistan Army in self defence. He directed that all necessary steps be undertaken for an effective response to such irresponsible acts.

The DCC strongly condemned the attack by Nato/Isaf aircraft on Pakistani border posts in the Mohmand Agency, which has resulted in the loss of precious lives of officers and men of the Pakistan Army and injuries to several. “It is a calculated response to US/Nato/Isaf’s bullying,” said a senior official, “though Pakistan may move further ahead to pull back its cooperation to US/Nato/Isaf in the so-called war on terror.”

The DCC expressed heartfelt sympathies and condolences to families of the brave soldiers who fought valiantly and embraced Shahadat, and also prayed for the early recovery of those injured.

The DCC noted that strong protests had been lodged with the United States and Nato headquarters in Brussels conveying in the strongest possible terms Pakistan’s condemnation of these attacks, which constituted a breach of sovereignty, were violative of international law and had gravely dented the fundamental basis of Pakistan’s cooperation with Nato/Isaf against militancy and terror.

The DCC noted that Nato/Isaf attacks were also violative of their mandate, which was confined to Afghanistan. Pakistan had clearly conveyed to US/Nato/Isaf its red lines, which constituted an integral element of Pakistan’s cooperation that was based on a partnership approach. The attack on Pakistan Army border posts is totally unacceptable and warrants an effective national response, the DCC added.
