ODM condemns Raila Odinga's humiliation at JKIA

Updated Tuesday, June 4th 2013 at 15:02 GMT +3
By Roselyne Obala and Geoffrey Mosoku

NAIROBI, KENYA: ODM leaders have condemned humiliation of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ( JKIA) and demanded an apology from Government.

The MPs led by South Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya expressed dismay at the way their party leader was treated by junior officers at the
airport.

They said that was the second time the former PM was subjected to such humiliation citing a similar incident where he was barred from the VIP lounge in Mombasa for an hour alongside Governor Hassan Joho.

Nyamweya said if the trend is allowed to continue, other former leaders such as Mwai Kibaki will be subjected to such treatment.

"Junior officers acted on the strength of a circular issued by Secretary to Cabinet Francis Kimemia," said Nyamweya saying the Government should apologies and desist from embarrassing the former PM.

Nominated senator Janet Ong'era told the Jubilee government to accord respect to Odinga and his family.

Ong'era said it was unfortunate that some officials in government still cling to the past behaviors in trying to demean the former PM following Monday's incident where Raila was barred from accessing the VIP lounge at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

"It's absurd that some mandarins operating from the office of the president want to subject Right Honourable
Raila Odinga to humiliation," she said.

Raila Odinga, and the Undying Quest for a VIP Status

by kenyantaboo

"… I was sitting somewhere and saw people walking in, who have swindled this country and walk in through the VIP entrance at the airport, yet when they go to other countries, they are treated with the contempt they deserve. but when they come in here, they walk in as VIPs. I want to talk about one or two whom you know. They are here. They come as VIPs. They are swindlers. Where are the Pattnis and the Somaias? They are swindlers, yet they walk around here as free as birds and we give them all the respect."

Hon. Shakeel Shabir, Kisumu Town East MP. Wednesday, 1st December, 2010. The Hansard

This week, the debate resurfaced, on who, exactly, qualifies to be a Kenyan very important person. It did not begin in Parliament but at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Raila Odinga, debatably Kenya's most experienced politician, had checked in for his routine flight to Kisumu via the VIP pavilion but was turned away "on orders from a high-ranking official from the Office of the President."

The Kenya Airports Authority have since clarified the matter, but the Orange Democratic Movement, Raila Odinga's wounded political outfit, is demanding "nothing short of an apology from the Office of the President."

"…Mr. Speaker, Sir. Again, security at Wilson Airport is wanting. Any Member of Parliament, or person who feels like a VIP will go through the VIP lounge and gain access to Wilson Airport…"

Hon. William Kabogo, Juja MP. 12th June, 2010. The Hansard.

From the above statement, two things can be deduced. That being an MP guarantees VIP access to government installations, and, if you cant make it to parliament, for one reason or another, the only thing you have to do is to "feel" like a VIP, and voila! However, to restrict the VIP access pass to parliamentarians and brain manipulation is missing the point. There is need to understand why, or why not, Raila Odinga would require the limited edition VVIP pass.

Raila Odinga is no longer a local politician but a global brand name. In April, after the Supreme Court declared Uhuru Kenyatta President, a friend from a major newspaper confided in me that newspaper sales had declined ever since Raila Odinga ceased to be front page news.

But why would Uhuru Kenyatta's image attract such a targeted boycott?, I asked. "Because supporters of Raila Odinga are passionate fans who worship him almost to a demi-god status." He gave me the example of reported cases around the country where internal decorations are made with newspaper cuttings of Raila Odinga. "They call him Baba", he told me, "he's a father figure to them, he's more than a politician."

Odinga's heavyweight status need no reminder. This is one individual who has been the poster image of Kenya's reform process. He stuck his chin out and orchestrated the most daring political acts, then, by arm-twisting iron-fisted Daniel Moi into signing a political merger then clearing KANU from within, planting Mwai Kibaki as NARC's figure-head and completing Moi's humiliation at the December 2002 polls. In NARC, he checked the government from within, consistently disagreeing with President Mwai Kibaki in principle, out of love for his country, and when the ‘Mount Kenya Mafia' had had enough of his abrasiveness, they cut him loose with the hope that he suffers the same fate as his colleagues whose political survival depended on licking the boots of the President of the day. But Raila Odinga often rolls on his own momentum, and before long he was back again keeping the government in check.

Kenyans love him, few hate him. All agree that the sacrifices he has made for his country are unprecedented. If a badge of honour was to be awarded for the most consistent Kenyan patriot, Odinga would have no competitors. He's folklore, his legendary status must be immortalized. A VVIP pass is the least we can give this man to say "thank you" for the physical and emotional scars he got in the line of duty saving Kenya from pig-headed, hyena-like enemies of this nation.

Nairobi ….June 4th, 2013….. Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) would like to clarify that the former Prime Minister and his wife were not denied access to the VIP lounge at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Contrary to reports appearing in sections of the media, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his wife Ida were allowed access and the use of the Government VIP Lounge on Monday and last Friday respectively.
However, no convoy can drive to the airside, because JKIA is a highly restricted security zone.
According to national security regulations, only vehicle convoys belonging to the President of Kenya, visiting Heads of State and the Deputy President of Kenya can access the airside at any of the airports in Kenya.
JKIA has three VIP Lounges – the State Pavilion for the President of Kenya and visiting Heads of State, the VIP III Lounge for the Deputy President of Kenya and Retired Heads of State and the Government VIP Lounge for Ambassadors and Government VIPs.
The former Prime Minister has unrestricted access to the Government VIP Lounge.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was Monday blocked from using a lounge normally reserved for VIPs at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.

The Nation learnt that it took the intervention of top government officials for authorities at the JKIA to allow Mr Odinga to access VIP3 lounge normally used by high ranking government officials- both past and present.

He was scheduled to fly to Kisumu in the afternoon.

Mr Odinga's chief campaign manager during the March 4 General Election Eliud Owalo blamed the incident on senior government officials he said were out to humiliate the former PM.

"I am aware there was an incident at the airport. There is a section of government officials who are using intimidation tactics that were used during the dark Kanu era," he claimed.

Mr Owalo complained that Mr Odinga's wife, Ida, had been subjected to similar treatment last Friday.

"Security personnel at JKIA claim they are acting on the basis of a letter written by Mr Francis Kimemia, whose contents they have been instructed to enforce ‘to the letter' at all airports within the country," he said in a statement.

He demanded that the government makes a public apology to Mr Odinga over the two incidents.

The government moved fast to downplay the incident, blaming it on "over-enthusiastic" civil servants and vowed to take disciplinary action against anybody found to have subjected Mr Odinga to such humiliation.

"That (blocking him from using the VIP lounge) is not an official position of this government that treats Raila with a lot of respect, said government spokesman Muthui Kariuki.

An official at Foreign Affairs ministry, which is in charge of VIP lounges at Kenya's international airports also distanced itself from the incident, pointing fingers at the JKIA security.

halafu ndo he humbles himself kwanza. the problem with politicians ni kwamba they are selfish and full of themselves.

naona angekubali mwito ingekuwa bora kama ushirikiano ungefaidi wananchi kuwaletea mabadiliko. FOR The SAke of the people if you understand what i mean. hakuna anayemlazimisha huyu kwa haya yote huja kwa hiari ya mtu binafsi.
