More than 50 per cent of Tanzanians have no access to clean and safe water due to the negative impacts of environmental pollution, Vice-President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein has said.

He said this on Tuesday in a speech read on his behalf by State Minister in his office in charged of environment Dr Baltilda Burian at the 9th steering committee for the International Organization of the Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) held in Dar es Salaam.
“We are facing great challenges of environmental pollution to the point that 50 per cent of our people have no access to good and quality water,” said the vice-president.

“Air pollution is another challenge that is coming up. It has lowered productivity in many parts of our country,” he said.
Dr Shein said the impacts of air pollution in rural areas were negligible because of limited industrial activities in those areas, but added that improper treatment and disposal of solid and liquid wastes were major contributors to increasing pollution in urban areas.

“The combined results of these problems are that both air and water have been contaminated with pollutants, which are detrimental to human health,” explained Dr Shein.

He said the government would come up with deliberate measures to ensure that issues of environment and climate change were seriously taken on board and worked upon accordingly.

“We must work collaboratively with stakeholders, such as involving non-governmental organizations, industries, professionals and the general public,” he said, adding:
“I believe we all know what is happening around the globe in relation to climate change.”

He said Tanzania had experienced the impact of climate change in various fronts, including the melting down of snow on Mount Kilimanjaro's peak.
