ABUJA— Security agencies have revealed fresh plans by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram to attack selected high profile targets in the federal capital ahead of this weekend’s independence anniversary.

The SSS claimed that the attacks are coming on the heels of a presidency directive to all security agencies to submit to it documents on their handling of the Boko Haram crisis since 2007. The presidency’s directive was the outcome of outrage that trailed the comments of the leader of the group released by the Police to a sister agency.

The Boko Haram group according to findings by security agencies has conscripted agents to attack selected government institutions and buildings in Abuja between Monday 26th September and October 1st 2011, when Nigeria would be celebrating its 51st independent anniversary.

Cleric says Boko Haram fulfilling political mission

Lukman Abdulraheem, president, Muslims Congress of Nigeria, says the group, Boko Haram, is hiding under Islam to fulfil a political mission.

Mr Abdulraheem, also deputy Imam, Ibadu Rahman Mosque, Akoka, Lagos said the violent activities of the group are not in line with the preaching of Islam.

He spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

"We have seen recently that the sect is not furthering the cause of Islam; many of the members are the formal thugs of some politicians.

He noted that chapter 5:33-34 of the Qur'an says, "whosoever spreads mischief on the surface of the earth by killing, maiming and so on, should be killed or crucified." He said that the group's alleged agitation for an end to western education was barbaric.

Mr Abdulraheem said that Islam condemns violence and promotes knowledge acquisition, adding that any group perpetrating violence is not protecting Islamic interest. He said that there is nothing wrong or unlawful about western education, noting that Prophet Muhammed encouraged knowledge acquisition.

The cleric noted that western education has helped much in improved health care, technological advancement and improved agriculture, which, he said, are the strong pillars holding human survival. He advised the group to desist from bombing and other violent acts, which, he regretted, was tarnishing the image of Nigeria.

The cleric urged Boko Haram members to use dialogue to resolve any conflict with governments or groups. He urged religious leaders to preach unity, togetherness and tolerance to promote peaceful coexistence of Nigerians.

ABUJA—THE Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the North-East Zone, which was set up following the bomb attacks by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, yesterday submitted its final report, asking President Goodluck Jonathan to consider the grant of amnesty to members of the sect wishing to surrender their arms to the Federal government.

The committee submitted its report on a day the security agencies commenced manhunt for suspected Boko Haram members who may have sneaked into Abuja to carry out suicide bomb attack on a national asset to dent the nation’s 51st Independence anniversary celebrations.

The Federal Government panel headed by Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, recommended that “the Federal Government should fundamentally, consider the option of dialogue and negotiation which should be contingent upon the renunciation of all forms of violence and surrender of arms to be followed by rehabilitation”.

Bok Haram rejects dialougue, vows to continue

Islamist Sect Boko Haram are accused of several bombings and killings majorly in Northern Nigeria.

The Boko Haram sect yesterday vowed to fight on, until their demands are met. The group rejected the recommendations of the Ambassador Usman Galtimari Panel, which prescribed dialogue to resolve the crisis in which many have died.

Boko Haram spokesman Abu Qaga told reporters on the telephone in Maiduguri yesterday that the panel acted on its own.

Qaqa said that the group was not satisfied with the members of the committee. It said those advising the government to involve the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar and some emirs in the Northeast in the talks are doing so at their own peril. He said the group regards the Sultan as a government official.

Christian extremist group, Akhwat Akwop threatens retaliation

On September 29, 2011 · In News

By Emeka Mamah
LAGOS—The new Christian terror group in the North, Akhwat Akwop, which was apparently formed to checkmate the activities of the extremist Muslim Boko Haram sect has asked nationals of five Islamic countries suspected to be funding the Boko Haram to leave the country.

Akhwat Akwop alleged that the Islamic republics of Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania and Sudan had been funding the terrorist activities of Boko Haram, warning that its members would attack the nationals of the five countries and their interests.

The group made its position known in a statement issued, yesterday, and made available to various media houses in Lagos, Abuja and Kaduna.

The group, which sounded a wake-up call on all Christians over the current activities of Boko Haram, said the violence being unleashed on the country was to intimidate President Goodluck Jonathan and other Nigerians to enable the Hausa/Fulani seize power in 2015.

Akhwat Akwop, however, said that political power must return to the old Eastern Region after Jonathan in 2015.

It further stated that it does not recognise any Muslim traditional ruler in any way or form in any part of the North
, warning that for peace and harmony in the North in particular and Nigeria in general to be maintained, the Hausa/Fulani who settled in the various minority tribes in the North must stop oppressing their hosts in those areas.

Akhwat Akwop came into security consciousness about two months ago when it dropped leaflets in some parts of the north, including Benue, Taraba, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Adamawa, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kaduna states, warning that it would do everything possible to liberate northern minorities from the strangle-hold of the Hausa/Fulani who, it stated, had been lording it over them and causing havoc in Nigeria in the name of Islam.

In Kaduna State, large quantities of the leaflets were left at the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Press Centre by unknown persons.

The leaflets, entitled Warning to Boko Haram, claimed that Akhwat Akwop stood for the Christian equivalent of Boko Haram, adding that it would be in the forefront of the struggle for the emancipation of northern minorities, whether Christians or Muslims.

Boko Haram scare: Independence parade cancelled

Written by Hamza Idris (Maduguri), Abdulkadir Badsha Mukhtar & Misbahu Bashir Thursday, 29 September 2011 05:05

The yearly Independence Day parade may not hold in Abuja this year because of security concerns, particularly the fear of the Boko Haram sect which has been blamed for string of deadly bombings in the past months, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.

A march past by military, police, para-military and school children is usually held at the Eagle Square in Abuja on October 1 every year, with the President and top government functionaries attending. Last year’s event was spoilt by two bomb blasts carried out by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

Sources told Daily Trust yesterday that this year the event is not likely to hold because of the fear of possible attacks by the Boko Haram sect, which claimed responsibility for the deadly Police Headquarters and UN House bombings in Abuja as well as many other attacks in Maiduguri.

Daily Trust’s sources in the military, the police and other agencies said the usual drills ahead of the Independence Day celebrations are not taking place this year, indicating that the event may not hold this Saturday as expected.

A Presidency official also confirmed to Daily Trust that the parade will not hold because of security concerns.
