Nine people were burnt to death after a Nissan matatu that they were traveling in was involved in a grisly accident along the Mai Mahiu-Narok road. Five other passengers were left fighting for their lives after the matatu rammed into the rear of a stalled lorry before bursting into flames.
The Saturday night accident at Satellite centre a few kilometres from Mai Mahiu town paralysed the flow of traffic on the busy road as members of the public moved in to rescue those trapped. The fate of the driver of the ill-fated matatu was not clear as police moved in to retrieve the charred remains of the passengers. At one time, members of the public had to watch from a distance due to the intensity of the fire as the victims screamed for help.
According to one of the area residents Peter Mwathi, the lorry ferrying sand developed a mechanical problem in the evening and stalled by the side of the road. "There was a loud bang and the matatu burst into flames killing five people on the spot while the other four died on the way to hospital," he said. He added that the other passengers were seriously burnt and rushed to various hospital in critical conditions adding that no one from the lorry was injured.
"Those passengers seating in the front were the most affected after they got trapped in the wreckage while those in the rear were rescued but with serious burns," he said. Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde confirmed the incident adding that the injured had been admitted at Kijabe mission hospital. Masinde said that police had started investigations adding that the driver of the Nissan matatu failed to spot the stalled lorry.
Initial investigations indicate that the driver of the Nissan matatu which was in high speed failed to see the stalled lorry and rammed into its real before bursting into flames," he said. The superintendent in charge of Naivasha sub-county hospital Dr Joseph Mburu confirmed that the bodies had been taken to the area mortuary. "The nine bodies some of which were burnt beyond recognition have been taken to the area mortuary while the survivors were taken to Kijabe mission hospital," he said on phone.
