Nine people who are suspected of participating in the murder of a UPDF soldier in Jinja, have been arrested.

Capt George Musinguzi, the UPDF Spokesman in Busoga Region said on Monday that the suspects include six UPDF soldiers and three civilians.

The arrest comes after the body of Lance Corporal RA 218630 Joel Cherukut, 35, was on Saturday night found near a railway line in Magamaga Town Council in Mayuge District.

Cherukut was reportedly undergoing a course at the College of Logistics and Engineering in Magamaga.

Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Mr James Mubi, had earlier confirmed the arrest of four UPDF officers.

“We visited the scene on Sunday and four UPDF officers attached to Magamaga Cantonment barracks have been detained following the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of their colleague,” he said.

According to Mr Mubi, Cherukut was on Saturday in the company of the suspects at Forest Bar and was later seen at Mama Kawala's Bar in Magamaga Town Council.

He said: “There's a possibility that Cherukut could have died after being crashed by train at midnight because his legs and some parts of the body were smashed. We are not ruling out that the accident could have been stage managed.

He said a death enquiry file has been opened up as investigations continue.

The body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem.
