A Tanzanian, who has been in Singapore posing as a tourist, has been jailed for two years for stealing over $100,000 (about Sh140 million) from a casino.
Media reports from Singapore reported late this week that Kipuyo Lemburis Israel was convicted on August 16 for wrongfully obtaining money from Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino. The 34-year-old stole the money by posting bets after the ball had landed.
Over two hours one night in May, a Tanzanian tourist amassed more than $100,000 at the MBS roulette tables. But Kipuyo Lemburis Israel was cheating, posting his bets only after the roulette ball had landed, a Singaporean newspaper reported on Friday.
Emboldened as he was not caught the first three times, the gambler tried once more. But his luck had run out and he was caught red-handed with $126,209 in ill-gotten gains.
The two-year jail term was the stiffest sentence handed to a casino cheat since Singapore's two integrated resorts opened earlier this year.
The judge agreed with the prosecution that deterrent sentences were called for, as the offences were numerous, premeditated and involved big sums.
I was of the view that substantial imprisonment terms were warranted in view of the gravity and scale of the cheating involved, said the judge. All the money except $4 has been recovered.
Mr Kipuyos trail began in June when a South African was also charged for a similar offence. The two were accused separately for cheating the Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) and MBS casinos in the largest fraud case uncovered at that time.
The Tanzanian had faced five charges of cheating the casino of a total of $126,209 by placing bets at roulette tables after the results had been declared between May 18 and 20 this year.
He was also charged with having casino chips worth $85,000 at Intercontinental Hotel, which is outside a designated site, an offence under the Casino Control Act, which prohibits the taking out of chips of more than $10,000 outside the integrated resort.
Mr Kipuyo had also been charged with two counts of trying to cheat the Bayfront Avenue casino of $52,500 in chips at roulette games, and three counts of stealing $5 chips from others at the gaming floor in May.
A South African, Sibongile Arthur Mgxashe, allegedly deceived RWS casino of $7,000 each on May 20 and 21 by placing late bets in roulette games. He was also charged with stealing three $5 chips from two people at RWS casino and stealing two $5 chips from an unknown woman at MBS casino.
