Contract for the construction of the long awaited Kigamboni Bridge is scheduled to be signed on Monday between the government, NSSF and the contractor who won the tender. The construction cost is estimated at 100bn/- with the government bearing 40 percent while the remaining

60 percent will be borne by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Construction is expected to take four years
In an interview with the Guardian yesterday, Ministry of Works Public Relations Officer, Martin Ntemo said the process of picking a competent contractor had delayed

implementation of the project.
He explained that there were six companies which had shown interest to enter into a joint venture in constructing the bridge.According to him, the government had to ensure that a qualified contractor was chosen so that the project is

implemented at required standards.
He refuted public claims that the delay was due to fear of losing revenues currently generated from the ferry services.“The contractor has been ordered to ensure it is completed by 2015”, he said.Ntemo said the 600-meter bridge will serve as the main means of crossing the creek for residents of Kigamboni, Temeke district to reduce traffic at the ferry. He said already NSSF has set aside a

total of 100bn/- for the construction of the bridge.
Meanwhile NSSF Director of Planning Investment and Projects Yacoub Kidula confirmed the selection of the contractor, saying everything was ready for implementation.“Too many companies applied for the job. We had to carefully scrutinise them to get the best,” said Kidula adding that more details will be given on Monday during the contract signing ceremony.Last year,

the Parliamentary Committee on Community Development called on the government to speed up construction of the Kigamboni Bridge, saying the issue has taken too long.
During his visit at Kurasini-Vijibweni area in March last year, Works Minister John Magufuli directed NSSF to speed

up construction of the bridge to facilitate easy crossing for Kigamboni dwellers.

Or lasivyo lingeweza anzia temeke

Ferry takes under 5 minutes - surely they should build a bridge?? but apparently many of the ships that pass through the harbour are too tall so a bridge wont be viable

Just thought of starting a thread about bridges found in Africa! As everyone knows bridges are infrastructural pride icons of respective countries and usually demonstrate the advancements of economies of respective countries! To start with here is Kigamboni bridge (680m) to connect Dar es salaam city center and the Kigamboni peninsula that is to start construction this year and is to be funded to the tune of US$ 130 mio. by both the NSSF (60%) and the GOT (40%) (http://www.businesstimes.co.tz/index...news&Itemid=57)

MziziMkavu huwatakii wadangayika mema.
