Naomba kujua historia ya msitu wa Sao Hill

The first softwoods in Mufindi were introduced as trial plots at Kigogo arboretum in 1939. During 1950`s small plantations were started at Msiwasi, Irunda and Kigogo Forest Reserves. Expansion of some softwood species to other areas like Sao Hill, Nzivi and Gulusilo were initiated during 1960`s. However, large scale afforestation at the present Sao Hill Forest plantation commenced in 1970`s under the sponsorship of the Work Bank.

By the year 1988, all the four Division’s productive area had already been planted with trees. The Forest and the land (ca 80,000 ha more than half the size of Dar es Salaam city) are owned by the Government of Tanzania, currently through the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) which was established in 2010.

Planted species are Eucalyptus spp, Pinus patula, P. eliotii, P. kesiya, P. caribaea, and Cupressus lusitanica. The dominant species is Pinus patula.
