CIA Agent's Pivotal Role in Nelson Mandela's 1962 Arrest
A CIA agent played a "key role" in the arrest of Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader of the African National Congress who was jailed for 27 years only to later win the Nobel Peace Prize and be elected the first black president of South Africa, The Sunday Times of London reports.
The Times quotes former CIA operative Donald Rickard as saying he tipped authorities that Mandela, the leader of the African National Congress, was working as a chauffeur, and helped pinpoint his location. Mandela was pulled over in Durban and hauled off to the slammer.
"I found out when he was coming down and how he was coming ... that's where I was involved and that's where Mandela was caught," Rickard reportedly says in an upcoming documentary "Mandela's Gun," which was obtained by the newspaper.
Getting Mandela off the streets had been a goal of the United States because officials feared he was under the influence of the Soviet Union, which could have led to problems between the two superpowers if South Africa broke into civil war.
"We were teetering on the brink here and it had to be stopped, which meant Mandela had to be stopped. And I put a stop to it," Rickard says in the documentary. He called Mandela a "toy of the communists."
Rickard, who has since died, was U.S. vice-consul in Durban at the time.
Mandela's grandson, Mandla Mandela, told London's Telegraph that President Barack Obama should apologize and reveal full details of the 1962 arrest of his grandfather, who died in 2013.
The CIA's involvement in Mandela's bust has been rumored for years.
