Mr Njuguna Gitau Njuguna of Mungiki's political wing was killed after he was confronted by three unknown assailants in Nairobi's Luthuli Avenue.
He was gunned down inside a shopping mall- Rahim Exhibition- at around 4 p.m.
Police removed his body to the Kamukunji Police Station. He was later transferred to the City Mortuary.
His death comes just a day after sect leader Maina Njenga claimed his life was in danger.
Mr Njuguna, the secretary-general of Kenya National Youth Alliance, came to the limelight in April last year following the death of the wife of the sect's spiritual leader, Maina Njenga.
The body of Virginia Nyakio was found dumped in Gakoe forest in Gatundu at the height of an anti-Mungiki police operation.
She was killed together with her driver, George Njoroge.
Several other Mungiki members had also been killed in unclear circumstances forcing the sect's leadership to speak out.
It is at this time that the Mr Njuguna came to the fore.
Their leader, Maina Njenga, was by then serving a jail term of five years at Naivasha Maximum Security Prison for being in possession of an illegal firearm.
