Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, now says he will contest for the presidency in 2026.
Muhoozi, a controversial army general who is often sparking mixed reactions with his online posts, made the announcement in a tweet on Wednesday, saying people have been wanting him to make the announcement.
“You have wanted me to say it forever! Okay, in the name of Jesus Christ my God, in the name of all the young people of Uganda and the world and in the name of our great revolution, I will stand for the Presidency in 2026!” he tweeted.
In January, Muhoozi said in yet another of his controversial Twitter posts that he was certain to succeed his father, who has ruled Kenya’s western neighbour since 1986.
The General noted that persons trying to prevent his ascension to Uganda's top seat were fighting a losing battle.
"I will be President of this country after my father. Those fighting the project are lost. MK Movement will win!" he said.
If Muhoozi runs for the top seat in 2026, he might be on the ballot with his father. Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) party last year announced that he will be its flag bearer in the polls, which will be his seventh term in office.
