The Government yesterday expressed its full support for Iran`s peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The stand was part of the gist of remarks by Vice President Ali Mohamed Shein when he met journalists at the Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam upon his return from a ten-day tour in Iran and Egypt.
Dr Shein was responding to a journalist who had wanted to know Tanzanias position on Iran`s highly contested nuclear programme.
The West, led by United States, opposes the Gulf state`s nuclear enrichment plan on fears that Iran might use the energy in the production of nuclear weapons.
However, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad has repeatedly stated that the energy was meant solely for generating power and other peaceful means.
`Our position is that we as a country support the use of Iran`s nuclear power project for peaceful purposes just as we had earlier agreed in Cuba,` stated the Vice President.
But he was emphatic that there was no way Tanzania would support the project if it is to be used for the manufacture of weapons because that carried the risk of leading to war.
