In order to use WhatsApp you basically have to download the app. You can’t use it on any other platform than the mobile app, and even if you try to use the desktop version the only way to access it is by scanning the barcode with the in-app camera. That hasn’t stopped people from using the messaging service through third party apps, however. This is an unofficial way to access the service and people basically take part in it because it allows them to incorporate other features that WhatsApp might not offer, as well as take advantage of the fact that they are using the service in an environment that isn’t controlled by the company itself.

Now if you try to use WhatsApp from a modded third party app, you will end up facing a temporary ban and you will have to contact WhatsApp in order to gain access to your account again. The important thing to realize here is that WhatsApp is doing this in order to get more people to use its official app. There is a monetary reason behind this, but the platform also wants to be able to prevent people from using the app for illegal activities.

"Unsupported apps, such as WhatsApp Plus and GB WhatsApp, are altered versions of WhatsApp. These unofficial apps are developed by third parties and violate our Terms of Service. WhatsApp doesn't support these third-party apps because we can't validate their security practices.", announced Whatsapp team on its FAQ page.
