Minister deplores purchase of luxury motor vehicles

Natural Resources and Tourism minister Ezekiel Maige declared on Wednesday that his ministry would purchase affordable motor vehicles to support its operations in a bid to reduce unnecessary public expenditure.
Maige made the pledge in Dar es Slaam at a press briefing about his ministry's strategies in executing its responsibilities.
It does not make sense for a country like Tanzania with a deficit budget to buy expensive cars. My ministry will only buy motor vehicles which are affordable for our country, Maige said.
He said despite its poverty, Tanzania could develop faster if public institutions developed a culture of saving money by reducing unnecessary public expenditure.
He explained that if all government officials made proper use of the few available resources, it would be possible to meet national development goals in terms of increased productivity and efficiency in various sectors.
Pointing out how people misused public resources, Maige said poaching was a threat to the sustainability of the country's national parks.
We shall not entertain any person who is illegally found with any products from our national parks such as meat, skins, plant species and ivory. We shall punish such people according to the law in order to be a warning to others with similar inkling, he said.
The minister reminded officials to educate the public on the importance of conserving the environment and discourage illegal transport of timber and logs.
The public can play a great role in maintaining our national parks because they are the ones who surround the areas. They are also able to identify poachers and furnish us with information about illegal use of our natural resources, Maige explained.
Speaking about how his ministry would curb the scarcity of staff, the minister said his office would employ more people the next financial year.
