IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn submits his resignation

WASHINGTON -- The International Monetary Fund says its embattled managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, intends to resign, effective immediately, as he faces sexual assault charges in New York.

The IMF's executive board released a letter from the French executive late Wednesday in which he denied the allegations lodged against him but said that with "great sadness" he felt compelled to resign. He said he was thinking of his family and that he wanted to protect the IMF.

NEW YORK — A prosecutor in New York says a grand jury has indicted former IMF leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn in connection with an alleged attack on a hotel maid.

The assistant district attorney did not specify the charge. The indictment, which was made by a grand jury, means formal charges have been brought and the case can proceed to trial if Strauss-Kahn pleads not guilty. A plea has not yet been entered in the case, although his lawyers have said he does plan to plead not guilty.

Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been granted bail.

This afternoon a judge in New York has set bail at a $1m bond and an insurance bond of $5m.
He will be placed under home detention with electronic monitoring - conditions which he had already agreed to.

Bail being granted means he will no longer be held at the notorious Rikers Island prison where he has been on suicide watch.

Prosecutors in the city said he was indicted by a grand jury, which means the case will proceed to a trial if he pleads not guilty.
He has not yet entered a plea but his lawyers have said he intends to deny the charges against him.

Mr Strrauss Khan will be released from this tough Rikers Island prison on condition that he wears electronic tag.

His wife and one of his sons were in court to hear the result of bail request.

The 32-year-old hotel maid, whose identity is being protected but believed to be from Guinea, gave her side of the story to the grand jury on Wednesday.

It has not been confirmed by her lawyers but it has been speculated the maid would also pursue Strauss-Kahn for damages in a civil suit.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn spent his first night out of jail since his arrest on attempted rape charges, inside a Manhattan safe house on Saturday, well-hidden from the media gathered outside.

Held under round-the-clock armed guard after being freed on bail on Friday, Strauss-Kahn, 62, was expected to stay in the apartment in New York's financial district for a few days until a more permanent home can be found for him during what are likely to be lengthy legal proceedings.

Strauss-Kahn, charged with trying to rape a hotel maid on May 14, ran into trouble finding housing when an apartment on the city's Upper East Side leased by his wife was besieged by the media, and the deal fell through.

His temporary housing was arranged by a private security company that is keeping him under armed guard and electronic monitoring as conditions of his bail. Prosecutors estimated the cost at $200,000 a month, which he is responsible for paying.

Television satellite trucks lined the block outside the apartment, with more than a dozen television cameras in position. Scores of reporters and photographers waited for a glimpse of the man who was just days ago one of the most powerful economic figures in the world.

He is allowed to leave the apartment only to travel within Manhattan for court appearances, meetings with his lawyers, medical appointments and a weekly religious observance.

Strauss-Kahn DNA 'found on maid's clothes'
Unconfirmed reports suggest the former IMF chief's DNA sample matched traces found on a hotel maid's shirt.

Investigators have matched a DNA sample from Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former IMF chief, with DNA found on the clothes of a hotel maid who accused him of attempted rape, according to news reports.

Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, faces sexual assault charges over the alleged attack on the 32-year-old maid at a New York hotel earlier this month.

He denies all charges and is currently on bail at a New York safe house.
Strauss-Kahn's DNA matched traces of semen found on the collar of the maid's shirt, according to The Wall Street Journal and France 2 television channel, quoting sources close to the investigation.
Neither police, prosecutors nor Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have commented on the reports.

Dominique Strauss Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, has pleaded not guilty to charges he raped a hotel maid.

The one-time French presidential hopeful will face trial over the allegations that cost him his job and sent the IMF into crisis. He will be back in court on 18 July.

A a brief hearing at Manhattan criminal court he pleaded not guilty in a strong voice, standing between his defence team and watched by his wife, the millionaire former journalist Anne Sinclair.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers said they needed six weeks to assess evidence that has been collected by the US authorities. DNA matching Strauss-Kahn's has reportedly been found in semen on the maid's clothing and on a section of carpet from his hotel room. Experts say the defence will likely argue that any sexual contact between the maid and Strauss-Kahn was consensual.

Strauss-Kahn was released on $6m bail three weeks aso. He has been staying in a $50,000 a month townhouse in Tribeca, Manhattan.

The former IMF boss is wearing a electronic tag that monitors his movements and must pay $200,000 a month for a private security team that is authorised to use force should he attempt to flee. He is under curfew between 10pm and 6am and allowed out only for court, doctors' visits and religious services. Prosecutors must be notified at least six hours before he goes anywhere. Under his terms of house arrest he can receive up to four visitors at a time besides family.

Last month a moving company picked up 44 boxes of furniture, clothes, art and a rug from Strauss Kahn's $4m Washington DC home and delivered them to the Tribeca townhouse.

At the time of his 14 May arrest the 62-year-old economist had been considered a leading contender to run against the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
