LEONARD MWAKALEBELA,
14th January 2010
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda declared his assets today, saying he has between 20m/- and 25m/- only in all his bank accounts. He said the saving was due to accumulated salaries, pensions and allowances.
In a question and answer session with editors held in Dar es Salaam this noon, Mr Pinda also said that he has only one private car.
"I've only one car which I got through loans given to MPs," declared the Premier.
Mr Pinda also explained that he was possessing three ‘simple' houses in Dodoma, Mpanda and Dar es Salaam.
"I've one in Dodoma which I built through loans, another one in Mpanda town which I built using my little savings and a small one in my farm. he elaborated.
According to the premier, he is planning to build another house at his home village (Kibaoni), to accommodate his delegation during his visits to the village.
"I've been staying in my grandfather's houses in all years while I'm at Kibaoni, but due to my current capacity and security concerns associated with it, I can no longer stay there. I'll build another one to accommodate us especially my delegation," said the Prime Minister.
Mr Pinda wondered why high ranking government officials were amassing wealth, while their costs were borne by the government. The prime minister was optimistic that he would make good saving now as most, if not all, of his costs were borne by the government.
"Amassing wealth for what purposes, why should you be so greedy…I don't even hold shares anywhere, maybe later on after making some good savings," he explained.
Mr Pinda said that some people would be surprised by his decision of not using the post to amass wealth.
My Take:
I would like for the Premier to go a step higher (if he hasn't done so yet) to release to the press his wealth declaration forms. Even more, President Kikwete should direct all his ministers and deputies to declare their wealth publicly to emulate the Premier.. It isn't hard or is it?
