Kenya has had a number of territorial disputes with its neighbours, some of which are yet to be solved almost 50 years after Independence.
The oldest dispute is that around the Ilemi Triangle a territory, claimed by Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia, and which goes back to the colonial times.
Following numerous efforts to demarcate the area over the past 100 years, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan have all made conflicting claims to the triangle.
Kenya currently has the de facto control and a new independent South Sudan could reactivate the issue. The triangle is a time bomb, given recent findings that the area could be rich in oil deposits.
Soon after Independence in 1963, Kenya was involved in a territorial dispute with neighbouring Somalia, leading to The Shifta War of 1963–1967.
Elements of the ethnic Somalis in the Northern Frontier District had purportedly attempted to join with their fellow Somalis for a Greater Somalia that included Djibouti and Eastern Ethiopia.
Joint patrols
Come 1976, Kenya again almost went to war with neighbouring Uganda, when the then Ugandan leader, Idi Amin Dada, claimed a big chunk of Kenya.
In the current dispute, the two countries have agreed to jointly police the disputed Migingo Island as they await the joint boundary verification exercise to resume.
Kenyan Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere and his Ugandan counterpart, Maj-Gen Kale Kayihura signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Kampala on August 23, 2011, in which both countries agreed to deploy 12 police officers each for joint crime prevention and patrols.
At the height of ownership wrangle, when Uganda sent its soldiers to the isle in 2009, the countries appointed a joint team of surveyors to determine the location of Migingo Island.
