REV Gertrude Rwakatare of Mikocheni B Assemblies of God, is demanding 2bn/- from KIU newspaper in damages over a false and defamatory story it had published.

In a demand note by Maleta & Ndumbaro Advocates to the publishers-Kiu Investments Limited and the printers, Imprint, the paper is accused of publishing a story which allegedly lowered Rev Rwakatare's reputation in the society.

''On November 26, 2010, your newspaper-Kiu, falsely, maliciously and baselessly published a story under the headline 'Mchungaji Rwakatare Matatani Tena! Ni Kwa Kuongoza Kanisa Bila Ya Kuwa Na Mume', which literary means 'Rev Rwakatare in trouble again! Is for running a church while unmarried,' reads the demand note dated 4th December and signed by the firm's Chief Counsel, Mr Daibu Kambo.

The lawyers say the article was full of lies, malice and was meant to harm and intimidate their client taking into account the reputation she has in the society.

They charge that the article was meant to mislead members of the public to believe that Rev Rwakatare who is also Special Seat MP, was accusing women of running for men in their offices, which she has never said.

''The malicious article was meant to accuse our client of involving the church in advancing her personal agenda on the process of obtaining loans from her loan advancing institution - it was meant to harm our client for treating her as a con person and not one who is out to solve the society's problems,'' reads the demand note.

The lawyers argue that the paper tries to show the public that Rev Rwakatare is a troublemaker and she should not be trusted and in the process shunned by the members of the public.

''Following the false publication, our client's character has been greatly tarnished and the members of the society are now shunning our client by treating her as a person who advances her personal agenda at the expense of the masses''.

The lawyers further claimed that the article had ill motives in nature from the beginning as Rev Rwakatare was never consulted before the story was published as suggested by the media ethics.

They have given the publishers seven days to apologize in the same newspaper and pay the damages, short of which they will go to court.

Apart from being the lead pastor of the church, Rev Rwakatare also owns a chain of St Mary's International Schools scattered in various parts of the country and also runs an orphanage in Dar es Salaam.

This is the second time the paper had found itself in trouble with Rev Rwakatare. Two years ago, she took the paper to the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) and won the case whereby the editor apologized and pledged not to write lies again against her.
