An Israeli intelligence website has refuted Tel Aviv's claims that a recent aerial raid in Syria had targeted Iranian military advisers and Hezbollah fighters, saying the attack actually hit Syrian army positions.
The DEBKAfile cited "highly credible" US military sources as saying that Israel had decided to take advantage of the chaos generated by Washington's decision to withdraw forces from Syria and Turkey’s threat to launch an operation in the Arab country's north.
Tel Aviv's purpose of the Syria offensive was to disable the Syrian military sites, they added.
On Tuesday night, Israeli F-16 warplanes fired Delilah cruise missiles from Lebanon's air space into Syria followed by similar air raids near Damascus by F-35 stealth fighter jets.
The second phase of the attack came after the F-16 missiles failed to reach their targets, DEBKAfile reported .
Russia's Defense Ministry said Wednesday that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched against unspecified targets near Damascus by six Israeli F-16s.

The Israeli army claimed in a tweet that it had prevented “the establishment of Iranian military capabilities in Syria."
Initial Israeli media reports speculated that a 747 cargo jet, belonging to Iran’s Fars Air Qeshm, had been the target of the Israeli attack at the Damascus airport.
Russia's Defense Ministry also said the airstrike in Syria attributed to Israel "directly endangered" two civilian flights.
However, ImageSat International, an Israeli satellite imaging company, released photos of what it alleged to be an Iranian warehouse near Damascus flattened by Israeli strikes.

Israel frequently attacks military targets inside Syria in what is considered as an attempt to prop up Takfiri terrorist groups that have been suffering heavy defeats against Syrian government forces.
On the contrary, Iran has been offering advisory military assistance to the Syrian government in its counter-terrorism battle at the request of Damascus.
US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced last week that the US would be pulling all its 2,000 forces out of Syria , in a move widely seen as a victory for Damascus and its allies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Trump's decision would not affect Tel Aviv's policy towards Syria.
But senior Israeli political and military figures criticized the US planned Syria withdrawal as a "surrender."
"The surrender of the Americans from Syria is a failure of Netanyahu's foreign policy. It clears the way for Iran's expansion and narrows Israel's ability to bargain with the Russians," tweeted Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition Israeli Yesh Atid party.

The Syrian regime will be ready to use
Russian made S-300 air defence systems
as of March, after completing training to
use them, Russian daily Kommersant
reported.
The paper said that as of March it would
be possible to deploy one air defence
battalion equipped with these missiles to
protect Damascus and its surroundings
area.
A member of the Russian Federation
Council’s defence and security
committee, Franz Klintsevich, said the
Syrian crews are currently undergoing
training, adding that “the Israeli
warplanes are now striking Syria
because they are still outside the Syrian
air defence range, but after the
deployment of the S-300, no one will be
able to escape them”.
The Russian Defence Ministry announced
that the Syrian air defences managed to
counter Israeli air strikes on Damascus
airport and some installations on
Monday.
In November, the Russian Defence
Ministry said its advisers were training
Syrian military personnel to use the
S-300 air defence systems, warning
those described as “foreign parties”
against any military provocation in Syria.
Former Israeli defence minister Avigdor
Lieberman has previously threatened to
attack Syria if it uses the system against
Israeli jets.

Following an Iranian strike on Israeli territory on Sunday, Netanyahu warned, “We have a permanent policy: To strike at Iranian entrenchment in Syria and hurt whoever tries to hurt us.”

Addressing reporters at the dedication of the Ramon Airport in Eilat today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on a missile attack launched by Iranians from Syria on the Golan Heights on Sunday.

“Last night the air force strongly attacked Iranian targets in Syria after Iran launched a missile from there at our territory,” the prime minister said.

The missile to which Netanyahu referred was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile defense system. On Sunday, Syria claimed its Russian-supplied surface-to-air systems had thwarted an Israeli air strike in the southern region of the war-torn nation, a contention bolstered by the Russian military.

Following the Iranian missile attack, Israel pummeled multiple Iranian and Syrian targets, with the death toll from the strikes reportedly reaching 11 combatants.


At the Ramon Airport, Netanyahu warned, “We have a permanent policy: To strike at Iranian entrenchment in Syria and hurt whoever tries to hurt us. This policy does not change whether I am in Israel or on an historic visit to Chad. This policy is permanent.”

He added, “We are acting against Iran and against the Syrian forces that abet the Iranian aggression. Whoever tries to hurt us – we hurt them. Whoever threatens to destroy us will bear the full responsibility.”

The flare-up arrives amid saber-rattling on the part of Iranian military officials, who routinely threaten to destroy Israel.

On Monday, for instance, state media quoted Iranian Air Force Commander Aziz Nasir-Zadeh, who said that his nation is ready for “the decisive war against Israel,” and is preparing for the Jewish state’s “elimination.”

In response, Netanyahu declared, “We will not ignore such acts of aggression as Iran attempts to entrench itself militarily in Syria and given explicit statements by Iran that it intends to destroy Israel, as the commander of the Iranian air force has just said.”
