An Israeli intelligence website has refuted Tel Aviv's claims that a recent aerial raid in Syria had targeted Iranian military advisers and Hezbollah fighters, saying the attack actually hit Syrian army positions.
The DEBKAfile cited "highly credible" US military sources as saying that Israel had decided to take advantage of the chaos generated by Washington's decision to withdraw forces from Syria and Turkey’s threat to launch an operation in the Arab country's north.
Tel Aviv's purpose of the Syria offensive was to disable the Syrian military sites, they added.
On Tuesday night, Israeli F-16 warplanes fired Delilah cruise missiles from Lebanon's air space into Syria followed by similar air raids near Damascus by F-35 stealth fighter jets.
The second phase of the attack came after the F-16 missiles failed to reach their targets, DEBKAfile reported .
Russia's Defense Ministry said Wednesday that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched against unspecified targets near Damascus by six Israeli F-16s.

On the contrary, Iran has been offering advisory military assistance to the Syrian government in its counter-terrorism battle at the request of Damascus.
US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced last week that the US would be pulling all its 2,000 forces out of Syria , in a move widely seen as a victory for Damascus and its allies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Trump's decision would not affect Tel Aviv's policy towards Syria.
But senior Israeli political and military figures criticized the US planned Syria withdrawal as a "surrender."
"The surrender of the Americans from Syria is a failure of Netanyahu's foreign policy. It clears the way for Iran's expansion and narrows Israel's ability to bargain with the Russians," tweeted Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition Israeli Yesh Atid party.

Jerusalem (CNN)Israel carried out a series of airstrikes early Monday against Iranian targets in Syria, the Israeli military said, in response to an Iranian missile fired at the Golan Heights, capping off a volatile 24 hours between the two regional enemies with the possibility of more fighting ahead.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck Iranian targets in and around Damascus, including the city's international airport, IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said. The overnight strikes targeted munitions depots, intelligence sites, a training camp and more, Conricus said.
The IDF also struck Iranian warehouses at the Damascus International Airport, Conricus said, noting that Israel observed secondary explosions, indicating that weapons had been hit.


Uncertainty remains over future of Syria safe zones
Israel also attacked Syrian anti-aircraft batteries when those batteries fired dozens of missiles at Israeli aircraft carrying out the strikes, Conricus said. Israel relayed a message to Syria that the military was only targeting Iranian forces and warned Syria not to fire at Israeli jets.
The wide-ranging strikes were in response to a medium range surface-to-surface missile fired toward the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Sunday afternoon. The missile was made by Iran and launched by Iranian forces, Conricus said, adding that it's the first time a missile with such a payload has been fired by Iranian forces at Israel.
The missile was fired from an area near Damascus, Conricus said, which is approximately 50 kilometers from the Golan Heights. Russia had assured Israel that no Iranian forces would be this close to Israel, according to Conricus.

Russian state media agency RIA-Novosti reported four Syrian soldiers were killed and another six wounded in the Israeli strikes, citing Russia's defense control center.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said 11 were killed in the strike, including 2 Syrian nationals. The SOHR described the Israeli attack as the "most intense and violent attack against the regime forces and their allies in terms of casualties since May 2018," when Israel carried out a large-scale attack on Iranian targets in Syria following dozens of rockets launched from Syria toward Israel. Israel accused Iran of firing the rockets.
But Iran's state-run FARS news agency denied that any casualties had taken place and reported that Syrian air defenses managed to intercept seven Israeli missiles fired into Syrian territory.

The head of Iran’s air force has warned that Tehran is ready to “confront” and “eliminate” Israel. His fighting words come after Israel launched air raids on alleged Iranian targets inside Syria, killing 4 Syrian soldiers.
Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, the commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF), issued the provocative statement to the Young Journalist Club news agency, according Iranian media.
