Mars Landing - Pictures

Historic pictures sent from Mars

A Nasa spacecraft has sent back the first historic pictures of an unexplored region of Mars. The Mars Phoenix lander touched down in the far north of the Red Planet, after a 680 million-km (423 million-mile) journey from Earth. The probe is equipped with a robotic arm to dig for water-ice thought to be buried beneath the surface. It will begin examining the site for evidence of the building blocks of life in the next few days.

A signal confirming the lander had reached the surface was received at 2353 GMT on 25 May (1953 EDT; 0053 BST on 26 May). Engineers and scientists at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California clapped and cheered when the landing signal came through. "Phoenix has landed - welcome to the northern plain of Mars," a flight controller announced.

One small step - images from the unmanned Phoenix space probe
were sent back to Earth after its successful landing on Mars.

Nasa staff had to wait about two hours after the landing
for the images which allowed engineers to check for signs of damage.

They also showed the rocky landscape of the northern
arctic plain where the probe will carry out its work.

Correspondents say patterns are similar
to what can be found in Earth's permafrost regions.

The Phoenix team reacted with cheers and hugs,
although project staff say there will be
many more moments of drama.

Mtakumbuka biggle two ilipotea na kutokutoa taarifa zozote about four or so many years back. Kudos kwa NASA wamewafunga goli Europeans.

Kudos NASA,

This is just baby steps on the front door porch, the real deal is intergallactic.

Invisible,

Thanx for the pictures, large and clear!

Lets wait for the exploration...Nafikiri hii ni kazi nzuri.

Ni kweli biggle iliwa let down na kukatisha tamaa!

tulikuwa tume_cross fingers ....

Pundit,

You are talking of something very far away!

I think before they think ...on intergallactic adventures they hav to be very clear with ..closer enviroments...who knows may b the datas they are going to obtain...on the current ...mission might help...!!

Huwa Nawaza Sana Where Is The End Of Sky? Yaani Baada Ya Pluto Kuna Nini, Nini? Kuna Mambo Mengi Hatujui, Na Hapo Ndo Mungu Anaitwa Mungu

Kama Toka Duniani Hadi Mars Ni Miles Kadhaa, Kama Mtu Anaweza Ku-explore Beyond Pluto, Basi Huenda Kuna Jua Lingine Na Sayari Nyingine Kama Dunia Na Watu Wanaishi, Sasa Ukiambiwa Labda Mitume Wetu Kama Yesu Jina Kuu Kuliko Yote, Na Muhamad S.a.w Wako Wanendelea Kuhubiri Injili Ya Matendo Mema Kwa Sayari Nyingine Utabisha?

Mimi sintobisha hilo swala...you never know!

Intergallactic siyo mchezo mwanangu, inabidi kwanza tucheze na hawa ancient five wonderers kwa sana tu.The Milky Way, which is by no means a huge galaxy, is about 100, 000 light years across. That means if you are going at the speed of light (we are lucky to achieve 0.000001% of the speed of light c= 299,792,458 metres per second or 1,079,252,849 km/h) you will take 100,000 years just to go across our own Galaxy.

To go to the Andromeda galaxy (the largest galaxy in the local group) at the speed of light it is estimated to take 2.52±0.14 million years!, if you want to be more realistic and use 10% of c as the speed we can dream of reasonably attaining in the foreseeable future, that will mean the speed will be reduced by a tenfold, meaning the time will be increased by a tenfold from 2.52±0.14 million to 25.2±1.4 million years even though a more realistic figure by available or even foreeseable technology is more than five fold that much, meaning 252000 ±14000 million years, about 20% of the age of the universe! . And this is just to go say hi to our neighbours, I am not even talking about going to inquire about the affairs of our "city" at the mayors office down yonder City Hall, a trip out of town would be stretching it and seeing an out of state cousin would be venturing outside space-time and into the multiverse, if not fiddling with quazars.

This is clearly science fiction territory for now, I mean even if we were to have the technology to attain 10% of c, what kind of propulsion/ energy would we use?

That is, unless you think of a clever solution to tunnel a shortcut in spacetime that will take you from one end of the universe to another such as suggested by manupulation of wormholes and black holes, highly speculative stuff in itself due to the unapproachability of these beasts.

Mkuu thanks for elaborative datas!

Na hapo kwnye technology nafikiri ndipo mchezo ulipo...

what if we are able to use the sun's own energy for propulsion. i mean if we are able to accumulate, preserve and release the accumulated energy i think we shall be able to propel something accross the solar system. if we shall be able to diassemble matter to a photon size and then re assemble it again, we can transfer something via these photons and then reassemble it once it reaches to its target.

The other thing is if we will be able to send human beings to a nearby planet(such as mars), then we can transfer with them an enough quantity of nuclear material, which can be used to launch a propulsion for the far galaxies,i'am afraid if we have to launch it from here on earth we can destabilise this planet because a huge energy will be released during the launch.

does it make any sense?

The sun is a minuscule and unimportant star on the periphery of our galaxy. If you are going at 10% the speed of light the sun's energy will cease to be meaningful in about 6 hours.Out of all the millions of years detailed above!

The other thing is if we will be able to send human beings to a nearby planet(such as mars), then we can transfer with them an enough quantity of nuclear material, which can be used to launch a propulsion for the far galaxies,i'am afraid if we have to launch it from here on earth we can destabilise this planet because a huge energy shall be released on launch.

does it make sense?

Launching from the moon for example has the advantage that the ship will not have to face the strong earth gravity to achieve lift off.The moon's gravity is 83.3% that of the earth.

Nuclear requires fuel, the problem with any system that will carry its own fuel is that no matter the reasonably efficiency of the technology such as nuclear, due to the astronomic distances and no refueling options the initial weight of the fuel will work against the entire idea of a lean machine that can conserve energy.

One solution that has been floated is to have a ship that can capture hydrogen atoms the most abundant element in the universe and process them as a source of energy in some nuclear fusion.

Then the challenge becomes how will people survive all those millions of years in a spaceship?Cosmologists and Astronomers suggest that a generational approach could be adopted. That people could leave the earth in a colony like ship, cohabiting and giving birth for generation after generation.I shudder to think of what they will eat!

Reversed priorities!
