President Jakaya Kikwete has said Tanzania needs bigger capacity ships capable of plying the Indian Ocean's vast waters to effectively take part in the fight against piracy.
Speaking during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Kikwete thanked the US government for its support in the fight against the menace, especially in capacity building for security officers. However, he asked the American government to assist Tanzania with a big ship capable of reaching the high seas to strengthen security in the world's third largest ocean.
Kikwete, who was responding to a question from a journalist, said US training of Tanzania's security personnel has helped the country to arrest quite a number of terrorists using it as a gateway to commit their wanton acts.
Explaining, the president said incidents by pirates have been on the increase on Tanzania's Indian Ocean territorial waters.
He said the measures taken by the government to fight against the problem have so far led to the arrest and arraigning of 11 pirates since March last year.
During the period, he said, Tanzania witnessed 27 piracy attempts on the Indian Ocean, 13 of which were threats to capture big vessels. Four ships were hijacked during the period.
"In all the incidents, security officers succeeded to rescue two vessels only," he said.
Earlier, Kikwete said bilateral relations between Tanzania and United States have become much stronger within the past two years.
He said US assistance in the sectors of health, water, power, education and infrastructure has been very valuable to Tanzania.
He said through US government assistance, at least 8,000 Tanzanian teachers have been trained and several schools given science and mathematics textbooks.
In the health sector, Kikwete said the US has helped to reduce malaria cases on the Mainland, while in Zanzibar the disease has been eliminated.

2. US assistance in the sector of health - Labda hii itakuwa ile malaria project akina mama wanajifungulia chini, watoto wanakufa sekta ya afya imecollapse mpaka kwa babu kumekuwa ndo referral hospital.
3. Wamerakani wamesaidia maji, duh kama Dar Es Salaam tunakunywa maji machafu tena kwa mgao vijijini ikoje, mimi sijaona msaada kwa hilo naomba nifuniliwe macho.
4. Power- Symbion yes it all goes down to that maana kupanda carrot chalinze ilikuwa danganya toto safariyote hapa ilikuwa kusisitiza symbion wapewe ulaji no more.
5. Education on shule zetu za msingi ni disaster, za sekondari zimebakia historical monuments na vyuo ndo usiseme.
Wadau mnasemaje?
