On a day when the club lost midfielder Anderson until February, Rooney handed manager Sir Alex Ferguson a boost by shaking off a hip problem.

Rooney picked up the injury in the win over Swansea and was forced to sit out the draw with Benfica in the Champions League.
He was described as 50/50 on Wednesday, but his powers of recovery have enabled him to pass a fitness test. "Wayne Rooney should be okay," Ferguson said. "He trained yesterday."
The news is a huge boost to the Red Devils as Rooney has scored nine goals in 12 Premier League games against the Magpies.
